Alvin F Edgar director of the Iowa state colleges band and concert orchestra will begin a four week course of study and training under Serge Koussevitzky conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the Tanglewood estate in the Berkshire hills Massachusetts.
Shenandoah Miss Mar belle Redfield, who went to Canton Connecticut to join the Show Shop this summer, fell down stairs at the theater. Her leg is in a cast. Miss Redfield, daughter of Mr and Mrs Duane Redfield of Shenandoah, was rehearsing for a part in Taming of the Shrew.
A large safe with a drilled combination was stolen from a Coca Cola bottling plant in Marshalltown. Police later recovered the safe in a field three miles northwest, with cash missing.
About 12 000 persons crowded the Silver Acres stock farm for the third annual two day Dubuque horse show and free horse show and race meet. Bart L. Molo sponsors the event. Mrs George Rath of Waterlog wins first in the Ladies three gaited saddle horse event with Little Kitty.
Paul B. DeWitt of Ann Arbor Michigan was named full time secretary of the Iowa State Bar association announced by G C Murray of Sheldon association president. DeWitt formerly Iowa state law librarian and assistant secretary of the American Judicature Society. The association will open permanent offices in the Southern Surety Building in Des Moines July 15.
Col Roscoe Turner the three time Thompson speed trophy winner will attend the second day program at Sheldon Roscoe Turner field August 18 and 19. He plans to fly directly from New York for the event as relayed by air show chairman Al Vint.
Police investigate reports a man who slashed his wrists and jumped from a fisherman's boat into the Mississippi River may be John D. Bennett of St. Louis. He used the name Charles Wilson and was booked for detention after a staged escape from guardianship in Ottumwa. Witness Baldy Bennett, a fisherman, says the man jumped from a boat tied at the levee, splashed into shallow water, climbed back aboard, cut his wrists again, then took a drink and jumped in once more.
The Agriculture Department reported that farmers last year had a gross income of 89,760,000,000, up 8407,000,000 from the prior year. Income included cash from farm product sales, value of products kept for farm consumption, and government benefit payments.
Rev. Claude Breidenthal told an open air Central Park audience that the rule of dictators cannot last and that history proves nations fall to God’s laws. The sermon urged reliance on Christian principles to right wrongs as summer park services continue with daily preaching by Washington church ministers.
Farm Security Administration announces 1940 41 tenant purchase funds approved by Congress. Cecil F. Rooks says applications are open for Washington county tenants and laborers to borrow for family size farm purchases. Loans amortize over 40 years at 3 percent interest. final approval based on character, farm inspection and available funds. only a limited number of loans can be made in the county.
Senate debate opened in Washington with Senator Morris Sheppard urging confirmation of Harry L. Stimson as secretary of war and Frank Knox as secretary of the navy. The military affairs committee had recommended Stimson 14 to 3 and isolationists were expected to oppose on fears of war involvement. Administration leaders anticipated quick confirmations.
Des Moines reports the state liquor control commission lifted a ban on Century Distilling company products from Peoria after a cache of 29 Town state liquor seats and several cases of whiskey and gin were found in the car of Lytton Younker of Des Moines. Younker faced a $700 fine for illegal transportation.
Yesterday evening a Farmers Mutual truck responded to a short distance west of town where a motorcycle was on fire. Fire officials reported the damage was not heavy.
In the afternoon the temperature reached 96 degrees, up from 92 the day before. Last night’s low was 65 degrees, compared with 55 for Saturday night.
The Farm Security Administration in Washington County will use the tenant purchase committee to review applications. Members continuing are Joseph H. Knotek and Otto Schmitter. retirements include T. H. Huston. A secretary of agriculture appointee may replace the retiring member. Applicants must present sound farm and home plans with help from Idelia A. Bakke and Rooks. Farms offered for purchase will be inspected and valued by earning capacity and productive value. The FSA says loans will not fund speculative prices.
Chairman Ray Whitehead announced 125 tickets have been ordered for a Washington excursion to see a doubleheader between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the St. Louis Cardinals on July 21. Costs rise to 8 dollars unless 150 passengers ride, deposits refundable for those dissatisfied. Train departs 1 AM instead of 5 AM to reach St. Louis in time for church.
James and his son Cyril operate a new shoe repair shop in Moore's Bootery on the east side of the square. James previously ran Harwood store repairs for seven years after early work in Columbus Junction. he and his family came from South Wales in 1920.
Howard Kerr and his crew paint the east exterior wall of the State theater in a deep red. Later Ralph and Clyde Pratt from theater management plan redecorating the front facade.
The plan allows a full day and evening in St. Louis. The Burlington train arrives at eight in the morning and departs at midnight, extending the visit with extended travel time and public viewing opportunities.
Washington county awaits 1940 census figures with interest as a rise above 20 000 could raise salaries for the county auditor treasurer and clerk of court from 1900 to 2000 dollars sheriff from 1800 to 1900 recorder from 1700 to 1800 and county attorney from 1500 to 1700. Local towns show growth and losses are unlikely to offset the county total.
German press reports France will vote to dissolve Parliament in a brief session and set up a fascist style government modeled on Italy and Germany. France would replace liberty with labor and fatherland in a bid to join a new European order. The move follows Vichy dispatches outlining the constitution and collaboration terms. London notices Franco embassy withdrawal from Britain.
Don Powers was fined five dollars and costs at a hearing before Justice of the Peace J. E. Bovee on a charge of assault and battery. Complainant was Clifford Campbell.
Stella Jorpeland, former Washington county health unit nurse, travels from Cedar Rapids to Washington for the month to assist maternity nurses during Thelma Luther’s vacation. Loaned by the Polk county unit, she previously trained in Chicago and now serves at Des Moines. Alma Hartz, state health department consultant, also helps this week.
Officials announced a salary cut affecting county workers with a reduction from 15 144 to 14 542 and a sustained drop of 10 dollars to 200 dollars, outlining budget adjustments and affected departments.
Don Radda furnishes a display of tall corn to advertise Feathorn for fall. He raised a record 28 feet ten inches stalk, with Journal stalks at six feet tall from the same strain. Radda moved the corn from his farm to two tubs carved from a vinegar barrel and placed them by the sidewalk edge before the Journal office.
