Night Rescue After Submarine Sighting
The submarine lingered near the lifeboats for about ninety minutes as night fell. Lanterns swung on the lifeboats while destroyers closed in for rescue. At eleven, a blinking white light appeared. an American destroyer arrived and survivors cheered. A second destroyer joined about an hour later and all survivors were aboard by two o’clock.
Mitchel Killed In Plane Fall At Gerstner Field
Maj. John Purroy Mitchel former New York mayor and army aviator died when he fell from a single seat scout plane at altitude about 600 feet at Gerstner field Lake Charles La. The fatal crash occurred at 7 30 am after approximately 30 minutes aloft. Mitchel who had just turned thirty nine would have on July 19. He had become an army flyer after losing re election bid for New York mayor last fall and was the citys youngest chief executive.
