Reports from Chicago and Washington describe Gen Shafter and Admiral Sampson agreeing to bombard Santiago's outer harbor at noon tomorrow. Dewey fires blank rounds to deter German ships from landing supplies as authorities act on troop movements and repairs.
Washington reports Secretary Long ordered Commodore Watson to detach his eastern squadron and sail immediately to the Atlantic. The fleet will include the battleships Iowa and Oregon, cruisers Newark Dixie Yankee Yosemite, tenders and supply ships, sailing to a designated rendezvous before pursuing Camara’s Spanish squadron. General Miles travels to Santiago to assess the campaign and aid Shafter.
A Madrid minister stated after a cabinet meeting that war must continue to avoid Spanish cowardice. The Temps cites Madrid dispatches claiming the cabinet debated peace talks, with ministers to study the matter and report. The pope and Papal nuncio are pressed to moderate actions, while Emperor Franz Joseph vows to use influence toward honorable peace.
Last act as to Hawaii reports President Wilson directing the Philadelphia to proceed to Hawaii with Admiral Miller aboard and authorizing United States Minister Sewell to take formal possession in the name of the United States. The ship was chosen as the best available Pacific coast warship. The Hawaiian legation seeks news from Honolulu via telegrams to the San Francisco consul.
In St Louis on July 8 the regular and middle-of-the-road Populist factions adjourned their separate conventions after morning splits. Regular ticket names S A Handy and J M McCall for judges, J R Smith for railway, J D Elliff for schools. middle-of-the-road ticket names J N Voorhis and A H Livingstone for judges, J H Hillis for railway, J D Brown for public instruction. Both platforms back silver coinage and legal tender notes while opposing large tax rises and debt for war.
Major General Nelson A Miles and the army headquarters staff departed for Charleston to sail to Santiago. The party includes generals Gilmore and Stone, Colonels Greenleaf and Maus, Majors Black and Rowan, and Lt Col Michier with headquarters clerks. They expect to reach Santo next week aboard Yale or Columbia.
The Marion Cyclé company of Marion Indiana has made an assignment with liabilities about 60000 dollars and assets far below that amount. The Chicago Stamping company of Chicago confessed judgment on notes totaling 24131 dollars. Garner Sims of Providence Rhode Island, a noted engineer and three time millionaire, appeared before the naval examining board seeking service in the engine room without pay. Secretary Long has contracted with Chapman and Merritt Wrecking company of New York to raise wrecks of Spanish warships off Cuba from twenty miles west of Santiago harbor.
General Shafter issues the Hobson exchange telegram noting all Merrimac crew members are safe with two convalescents. A jubilant reception follows as Rough Riders and Seventh Regiment, along with Ninth and Tenth Cavalries, crowd Hobson and his men, breaking down barriers of race and class in a unified show of respect.
A July 6 message from Clara Barton at Siboney reports General Shafter's front near Santiago facing massive refugee needs. Details describe hunger, nakedness, scarce supplies, high tides, surf, broken boats, and Red Cross staff under fire as they struggle to deliver aid and return to the front.
The Reuters copy describes General Kent's division of the Fifth Army Corps reporting 695 dead or missing from 5160 engaged near Santiago de Cuba. It notes the division sustained the heaviest losses on July 1 and in the charge on San Juan Hill, more than any other unit, with Hawkins' brigade also heavily engaged.
