Butler Home Blends Old Antiques With New Living Space
The John Butler residence at 1133 South Iowa Avenue shows a careful mix of new and antique features. John Butler rebuilt cabinets in a remodeled kitchen, Mrs. Butler added closets, and the couple added a sunken 20 by 30 foot living room with a wide doorway to the old dining area. Architect David Yoder of Kalona and contractor Don Vogel guided the project, with the Butlers contributing hands on work and choosing a rough siding, porch design, and interior decor to suit family life and a sense of space. Their daughters live in Newton Des Moines and East Greenwich Rhode Island. The family embraced the changes rather than moving, creating a home they feel fits their town lifestyle and gatherings.
