A column reports a fatal haying accident near here on Thursday. Roy Flage, 48, died from a broken neck after falling through a barn hay chute and is survived by his wife and son Donald. Stanley Fox, 29, being treated after a fall from a load of hay, suffered a broken back and severed spinal cord.
Citizens in Iowa City approved a 60 000 bond issue for airport additions and improvements by 354 to 40 at a special election. The measure also authorizes a percent mill tax levy to repay the bonds and brings a 322 500 government appropriation for runway extension lighting and grading.
Francis SeVier ding two and a half year old son of Mr and Mrs Lawrence SeVier ding of near Bellevue was fatally struck late Wednesday by a southbound Milwaukee road passenger train. Train men said he ran on the track through the family farm and he died a few hours later in a Bellevue hospital.
Des Moines Johnny Kobes, operator of Melody Mill near Iowa City, is accused by the OPA in federal court petition of saving ration stamps by collecting them from customers and submitting them to suppliers, thereby acquiring more stamps than entitled and seeking an injunction.
The Rev. F. L. Hanscom of the Little Brown Church in the Vale tells of passing the collection plate on July Fourth for 250 postcards featuring the church. Proceeds fund the pictures and relate to a U S O program in an Arkansas Alaska event in August.
In Ruthven the Consolidated grade and high school building burned Wednesday night. Insurance on the 30 year old frame structure with brick exterior was $15 000, with loss previously estimated above $80 000. Flames appeared to start near the top after Red Cross sewing workers finished for the night.

United States forces raid the Bonins sinking or beaching five Japanese ships and destroying 49 enemy aircraft as Saipan ground operations push toward Garapan, the island capital, with a harbor base at Tanapag.
Judge P. J. Siegers granted two divorce decrees in Newton. Mil dred Maxine Davis vs Harley Bert Davis and Velma Amelia Trent vs William James Trent were filed in court. A new divorce action was filed by Theodore William Reynolds against Mildred Reynolds, citing a marriage at Winfield on August 4, 1925, and separation on February 1, 1944.
A large audience is expected for the union shore service in Central Park next Sunday evening at eight. Rev. George Kerr will speak on Making the Most of the Rest of Life. The service is the third this summer with Rev. Alfred Trenerry presiding and several ministers contributing prayer and scripture. A divorce complaint lists Betty Colleen Reynolds aged 16 as a minor child and cites L. J. Kehoe as attorney for the plaintiff. A second case by Dora L. Dettwiler against Harry F. Dettwiler notes a 1940 marriage in Washington county and three children with requests for custody in the decree.
German forces halt Allied advance along a 160 mile stretch on the Gothic line in north central Italy as they mount strong counter attacks from Siena to Rosignano. Americans report street fighting in Rosignano with gains of two thirds of the town while coastal progress near Livorno stalls.

Washington county war finance chairman G. E. Mace urged brisk purchases to push the fifth war loan over the top. He noted Monday and Tuesday holidays slowed progress but expected better sales today and Saturday. He contrasted civilian indifference with service members abroad who are buying bonds, asking if Iowans will let soldiers and sailors finance the war for them.
Fleets of American heavy bombers estimated at over 1500 aircraft joined attacks on Germany from bases in the British Isles and Italy. In the aerial battles, 8th air force fliers claimed 75 enemy planes downed as the raid unfolded over German targets. Separately, a Cleveland meeting of the American Chemical Society discussed potential future use of alcohol as motor fuel amid shifting economic conditions.
Dora Mae Walker a 17 year old girl held in Washington county jail for nearly a week will be sent home to her mother in Idaho once railway fare is provided. Sheriff Putnam said he received a telegram from Mrs. Clara Walker of Portland asking for the girl’s return and promising funds to cover the trip. Dora Mae had joined a party of youths in Portland and was later taken into custody after escaping an assault near Ainsworth. The trio and another woman she traveled with are wanted for robberies across several states and are believed AWOL from Camp Breckenridge Kentucky.
American B 29s bombed Sasebo, a major Japanese naval base near Nagasaki, and hit industrial targets at Yawata for the second time. The raid aimed to weaken naval strength while Marines and soldiers push on in the binuclear campaign around Saikin Island to threaten the homeland.
Army ordnance crews coat automotive fittings with red paint to improve visibility and ease lubrication in combat zones. The marking targets fittings on vehicles and related gear to speed maintenance procedures.
Iowa farm income for January through April 1944 reached 587 million dollars, up 114.6 million from the same period in 1943. April alone brought 134.7 million, with livestock contributing 118.36 million and crops 16.35 million, while 1943 April totals were 109.27 million.
Yesterday evening at about six o'clock Washington fired up its siren for the first time in three months. Chief Hal Reister noted the long quiet period since April and July fires, with only a small outdoor cob fire at East Second street near Burlington tracks causing minimal damage. The State theater blaze prompted a still alarm but the main fire response was limited to the nearby incident.
