The executive council plans to raise the state tax levy by two mills to cover higher costs. Current levy stands at 9.11 mills with projections toward 11.38 mills for next year, following passage of the omnibus appropriation bill. State Auditor Haines expects little change in valuation.
In Des Moines Iowa on July 7 interest centered on speeches by F J Libby and Senator Simeon D Less and on a parade of delegates. The parade expected to draw about fifteen thousand people led by Oklahoma for exceeding its delegate quota.
Arthur Loreng former editor of the Illinois Star Zeitung was found guilty of criminal libel against the American Legion after editorial calling its members bums vagabonds and tramps. He faces one year in jail or a $500 fine or both with a new trial motion set for July 14 and bond posted.
Lieu tenant Louis J. Roth, a missing naval balloonist, is the son of Louis Roth the city’s financial commissioner and former mayor. Roth, a 1913 Annapolis graduate, served in World War I and later joined the reserve. He was part of the crew testing the ZR 38 airship that exploded during a trial near Trull England. he was thirty three.
Winona Lake Ind July 7 An international conference of Christian citizens dispatched an address urging the world to try Christianity in international relations The text calls on nations to unite in a new standard based on Jesus teachings Delegates from many denominations and over twenty foreign countries approved the message and sent it to sovereign heads of more than fifty nations including major European and Asian powers.
Bandits stopped a railway train fifteen miles from Canton killed a Chinese officer and soldier and captured about ninety Chinese passengers. They took loot valued at fifty thousand dollars and are holding passengers for ransom.
The Associated Press reports New York July 7 that the actual condition of clearing house banks and trust companies for the five days shows an excess in reserve of 5 794 230 dollars, a decrease of 6 600 590 dollars.
Des Moines reports about a dozen Iowa women joining delegates heading to the National Federation of Professional and Business Women's Clubs convention in Portland Oregon from July 9 to 14. Des Moines Iowa July 7 The local school board faced a parking shortage while planning two new high schools The Lincoln and Roosevelt were set to open at the start of the fall term A landscaping rearrangement was made to create sufficient student parking spaces for their cars.
On Independence Day five babies arrived in Des Moines with four girls and one boy. The births occurred in local hospitals as families celebrated the holiday.
A windstorm fanned a fire in Goldfield Nevada believed started during bootlegging activity. One man died, a woman is missing, and damages reach about 1.5 million dollars. Only a few buildings remain including the Goldfield hotel and rail station as the fire razed much of the town.

A government tug was dispatched to recover it as search efforts continue for Lieut Roth and Lieut Null after their United States Navy balloon left Cedar Rapids on July Fourth.
