Tracey the Verrible Eludes Prowess of Washington Authorities

Oregon convict Tracey the Verrible again slips past pursuers. He infiltrates a Seattle ranch, takes command of the property, coerces a Japanese fisherman to row him, and rigs a staged breakfast scene before gagging the Johnson family and fleeing down the sound with bundles of clothing and supplies. Deputy Sheriff McKay alerted after the Johnsons freed themselves.

London Jubilee Feast Hails King After News of Safety

Half a million Londoners and many more watched the king dine the poor in parks and halls. Sir Thomas Lipton supervised the feast with temperance tents and donations of cups desserts tobacco and chocolates. The Prince and Princess of Wales visited. joy and cheers filled the city as celebrants sang God Save the King.

President at Oyster Bay arrives for summer home

Roosevelt arrived at Oyster Bay on Saturday at 5 16 p m to a cordial welcome. The village signaled with whistles as the train stopped and long time friends greeted the president at the summer retreat.

Swift & Co Fire at stockyards costs half a million

A blaze at Swift & Co in Chicago on Saturday night damaged a four story brick building at Pack ers avenue and Broadway. The loss is estimated at 600000 with part of the structure saved and insurance expected to cover the claim. The fire threatened adjoining plants Armour & Co and Libby McNeil & Libby and required extensive fire department effort.

Three Chicagoans Drowned at Henton Harbor

A Chicago group of four swam at Henton and Renton Harbors in Michigan on July 7. Rudolph Steffick his wife and sister all drowned in the St Joseph river after they were carried under by a rapid current. The remaining swimmer John Thorpe survived by grabbing a timber after submerging for the third time.

Riot on the north side over a tin cup sparks broad clash

Uncle Sam's Big Gun Delivers A 2370 Pound Projectile

Albany reports the Watervliet arsenal preparing the famous 12 inch rifle in a national display. The gun, fifty feet long and weighing 190 tons, will fire a five foot four inch projectile weighing 2 370 pounds, with powder charges of 1156 or 1176 pounds depending on powder type, and will allegedly penetrate 42.5 inches of steel at five miles.

Armored Gun Claimed to Reach Manhattan and Brooklyn

Artillery experts describe a massive 180 ton gun mounted on a disappearing carriage at Sandy Hook capable of firing 32 miles. It could reach all of Manhattan up to Central Park and drop shots into Brooklyn, with ranges to Hastings and Perth Amboy. The mechanism uses simple worm gearing and can be fired by electricity or friction prime. Previous large guns are cited for comparison, noting the Watervliet gun as the most powerful yet inferior to this model.
