John Ludwig, 76, of Sigourney, died after injuries from being struck by an auto driven by Mrs. Raymond Goeldner. Born near Sigourney, he lived on the family farm his entire life. Survived by brother Joe Ludwig of Sigourney. Services will be Friday morning.
Miss Margaret Wood aged 20 of Carroll Ta and Miss Florence Smith aged 61 of Corona Cal died at a local hospital Wednesday night following injuries from two separate automobile accidents reported recently.
DES MOINES an 11 year old boy Gene Parmenter 1898 S&S FB Sixteenth street jumped off a raft and drowned in a river bottoms soundpit at 8 39 p m He was fully clothed and sank in 18 feet of water.
Waterlon municipal court charged George Gilbert 22 Aldo Sanford 9 Ralph Facles 19 with explosive firecrackers after a bomb exploded Tuesday in the east Watering business district. The blast cracked three plate glass windows disabled two neon signs and caused 275 dollars damage.
TAPORTE CITY The First Presbyterian church of ta Porte City will receive $1,900 from the estate of the late P. H. Paice, provided oil or sulphur deposits are found on a quarter section of land in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The money funds a church organ purchase if royalties cover bequests. otherwise the amount is prorated among the beneficiaries. Provisional bequests of 1,990 to Uppertowns University at Fayette, La Porte City Cemetery Association, two sisters, and two brothers are also provided.
Gus Cox, 19, of Ackworth Iowa, allegedly struck seven pedestrians in a crowded Fourth of July gathering. He remained in the county jail after officers said the car rammed into the crowd. Sheriff Ray Shepard reported no charges filed yet against Cox, who was with several other youths in the vehicle.

Harry S. Dorrington of the John B. Rogers Producing Company arrives in Washington to serve as business manager for the Washington Centennial celebration set for August 8 to 10. He has 14 years with Rogers and helped organize large events in the US and Canada. Dorrington hails from Jerseyville Illinois which marked its 100th anniversary recently. Centennial committees report strong progress and enthusiasm. An all centennial committee meeting is at the Y M C A at 7 30 tonight to finalize arrangements with the business manager.
More than 8 000 Washington county drivers applied for 1939 41 operator licenses in a rush that filled sheriff Putnam’s office and Des Moines channels. About 5 665 were processed by Mary Westphal with help from bankers. totals include Crawfordsville Kalona Riverside Wellman Rubio West Chester and Brigh ton. The July 15 deadline extends the renewal window and many drivers still await new licenses.
Iowa business shows a noticeably higher May level than April 1939 with gains across retail sales and building materials. Prof George R. Davies notes independent store sales up about 14 percent from 1938 and seven other lines also advance. Building supply hardware and clothing lead gains.

Two young men driving a four meat truck from St Louis to Waterloo fell asleep and left the road a half mile south of Crawfordsville at about 5 am Tuesday. The wheels sank in mud after the truck left the shoulder. No injuries are reported and the vehicle was stranded following the mishap.
Thousands gathered for the Whisker and Supbonnet clubs midweek parade in downtown Washington. The two clubs filled a two block long procession after a Municipal band concert with about 200 participants in old time attire. Next Wednesday another parade and a Whisker club kangaroo court are planned with expected larger crowds.
