Chicago July 4 The wheat market closed lower after a volatile week driven by weather reports from the Northwest and Oklahoma. Wheat futures fell as rain and improved conditions tempered earlier gains, while corn faced dry weather and strong demand. Provisions weakened with a 10 cent drop in hogs, and mixed cash markets reflected light transactions and uncertain crop prospects.
The market faced tougher selling than last week with receipts totaling 43.00 head. Cattle demand improved since Monday but loin prices stay down with steers, cows, and calves all fluctuating. Hog activity was slow as buyers cleared stock. sheep and lambs remained steady to slightly higher despite a week of varied results. Overall weekly receipts reached 77,000 head, up from 72,000 a year ago.
South Omaha July 2 cattle receipts show unchanged native steers at 4.75 to 8.00, cows and heifers 3.25 to 6.25, western 3.50 to 6.50, Texas 3.00 to 6.00, range 2.75 to 5.50, canners 2.50 to 2.50, stockers 3.90 to 5.75, calves 3.50 to 7.00, bulls 3.25 to 5.50. Hefty hogs quoted 7.10 to 9.50 with bulk around 8.75 to 8.85. Sheep receipts 700 with lambs 4.75 to 5.50, wethers 3.00 to 4.50, ewes 3.40 to 4.10, lambs 6.25 to 9.00.
Des Moines and St Joseph market summaries show cattle receipts around 90 for Des Moines with slow demand and mixed quotes from good to choice, including cows, veal calves, and cutters. Hogs receipts near 500 at Des Moines with slow selling and prices from 5.85 to 8.50, while St Joseph reports cattle and hog values with calves and industrial quotes and tops near 9.12 for hogs.
