Beating and robbery suspect arrested in Anamosa
One of two men sought in the robbery and beating of coin dealer Ray Lawrence was held in the Jones County jail after being arrested in Martello Iowa. Lawrence, publisher of a coin collector magazine with his twin brother, had lived in Washington a time ago and worked at the post office for the bureau of internal revenue. The other suspect remained at large as search efforts continued in southern Anamosa.

Waterloo Man Faces Charge of Murder
Waterloo 46 year old Jethro Spates was charged with murder in municipal court over the fatal shooting of Silas Nunn 40 on Independence Day. Police say Nunn died an hour after being hit in the right side by a rifle bullet at Spates home during a scuffle when others tried to stop him from taking the gun outside.

About 130 visitors from seven states toured the DAR log cabin in Sunset Park on Tuesday afternoon. Hostesses Mrs Marietta Workman and Mrs Elizabeth Clark reported strong interest in the historical antiques. Visitors came from Washington, California, Kansas, Ohio, New York, Colorado and Colorado Springs, with some from Los Angeles and Salina.

States Corn Crop Growing Rapidly
Iowa’s 1961 corn crop moved ahead rapidly with 60 percent cultivated for the last time. A year ago only 20 percent had been laid by while the average is 55 percent. The corn stands about 26 inches high versus 12 inches last year. Oats are mostly headed and ripening in early fields. southeast Iowa shows the least favorable conditions due to soil moisture.

Party Breaks Up At Lake Darling Beach
Washington County sheriff's officers dispersed a large student beer party at Lake Darling State Park near the beach around 11 pm Monday. The group, apparently Parsons College students from Fairfield, faced intoxication charges for one youth and littering charges were to be filed against the rest by park custodians.

Louie Tinnes of Keota, 59, died at 5 30 a m in his Keota home. Funeral arrangements are pending with Powell Funeral Home. He was born near Keota December 23 1901 son of Petie and Kate Starr Tinnes. He married Rosella Biew on April 17 1925. He had worked at the Keota Lumber Co for the past year and was a Knights of Pythias member. Survivors include his widow a daughter Janice Lines of Des Moines three grandchildren two brothers Ralph and August Jr of near Keota one sister Elsie Fritz of Brighton. One son and a half sister preceded him in death.
