Parents of two Washington county service men learn from the war department that their sons Staff Sergeant Lester Long and Staff Sergeant Robert L. Bauer were killed in action over Austria. Long, an engineer on a B-2, had been overseas since April. Bauer, a B-24 crew member, had been in service since 1942 and overseas since April. A third local family, the Hotle home, reports Lt. David J. Hotle missing in action over Germany since June 20, with Bombardier duties on a B-24 Liberator.

A large barn on the Dewey Stephens Jr. farm three miles east of Ainsworth along highway 92 burned yesterday at noon with contents lost. A truck and a tractor were destroyed, a combine was moved out, and no live stock was harmed. The Alex Clegg place, now Dewey Stephens farm, was insured with the Washington County Farmers Mutual Insurance Association. The barn measured 54 by 56 feet.
