Des Moines reports that Towans are observing a 55 mph limit better than travelers. Since March 1 the highway patrol has issued about 10,000 car and 2,500 truck speeding citations, with thousands more warned. Minimum speeding fine is $45.
The Washington YMCA announced new Saturday summer schedules. The facility will be open only from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays until further notice.
Police investigated a Derby gasoline station burglary on Madison Street Washington where a tire iron pry opened a back door and about 40 dollars in change was reported missing while cigarettes and inventories were checked. Kalona deputies checked a theft at Super Valu where burglars forced a side door and carried off a safe containing 381 dollars in cash over 1200 dollars in checks 30 one dollar silver certificates and several time certificates bonds and abstracts.
The Central Park fountain remains shut until at least next week after vandalism caused a leak and electrical short. City Water and Light superintendent Marv Glandon said crews are tied up repairing a water main break and cannot resume fountain repairs until next week.
A Hy-Vee food store on Ottumwa's south side was gutted by a late Tuesday night blaze with damage estimated up to 500000. Two firefighters were hospitalized for smoke inhalation and exhaustion, one in ICU, as flames breached the back roof and the building collapsed onto its contents. The fire started in refrigeration equipment and was reported by a janitor who found thick hallway smoke.
The Washington Community Schools Board of Education meeting with the joint county schools set for July 8 to discuss the new area education agency has been cancelled. A new date will be scheduled when Highland, Mid-Prairie, and Washington districts can meet to discuss the agency.
In Moscow, Nixon and Brezhnev end seven day talks with limited accords on nuclear tests and defensive missiles. They promise to seek a future SALT extension, acknowledging failure to halt the arms race, while Kissinger says a full-scale accord is imperative.
Gov. Robert D. Ray leads eight Iowa livestock producers to Washington to meet Agriculture Secretary Earl Butz and officials, seeking assurances on the impact of low meat prices and the long term effect on consumers. The delegation includes leaders from cattle and pork associations and livestock markets.
