Three-Quarter Century Club Set Dinner Date

The Washington based Three-Quarter Century club will hold its annual dinner on Saturday August 14 at the Washington Country club. Membership is open to residents and former residents aged 75 plus with no fee or duties. Reservation cards will be mailed to rostered members. blanks available at the Journal office. Lunch served at noon with a brief program to follow.

Angry Senators Eye Cuts in Foreign Aid Amid Indochina Criticism

Washington reports show mounting Senate anger at British and French Indochina policy and possible pushes to trim the 3.34 billion dollar foreign aid bill. Moore Reports 350000 Iowans Out of Work

Des Moines based unemployment report shows grim job losses with George E. Moore, state employment director, estimating 35000 Iowans out of work, up from 26000 six months earlier. The figure represents about 3 ½ percent of Iowa’s 1 025 million person workforce. Moore had hoped unemployment would not exceed 2 percent earlier this year and declined to offer a midyear forecast.

Barbara Stephens Named Attendant at Iowa Music Camp Queen

Carole Pfaltzgraff of Dumont High School was elected queen of the all state instrumental music camp at the University of Iowa by 260 participants. Attendants are Elizabeth Field Decorah Jann Fraser Oroville Calif Joanne Moon Charles City and Barbara Stephens West Chester.

Wellman Boy Injured In Motorcycle Mishap

Mrs. Orva Scott of Washing ton reports her grandson Eugene Scott 18 son of Mr and Mrs Richard Scott of Wellman suffered a badly broken leg below the knee in a motorcycle accident south of Wellman Friday afternoon The rider was on a first ride when the accelerator stuck and the bike ran away A group of boys on motorcycles helped him to Wellman and he was taken to Mercy hospital in Iowa City He is in room 325 and would appreciate hearing from friends

Fireworks at 9 p m tonight will climax the American Legion sponsored celebration at Townsley park. Afternoon events include a beauty contest at 2 30 p m, Red Brick school rhythm band, Grand American shows ending in Washington this evening, and the horseshoe pitching finals.

Farm Bloc Foresees Senate Backing Flexible Price Bill

Farm bloc leaders warn the administration plan will likely be enacted as Democrats push the issue in the fall elections. They doubt the Senate can overturn Eisenhower’s House victory and preserve the rigid price supports of World War II. French Repulse Reds Attacking New Defenses

Communist divisions attacked Phu Ly on the Red River delta forcing a brief French counterattack with tanks artillery and B 26 bombers from Hanoi. About 200 rebels were killed and 200 wounded as the assault stalled and the town remained under French control near the Davy River.

James Greiner Fatally Injured In Farm Mishap

James Howard Greiner seven year old son of Mr and Mrs Howard J Greiner of 50 miles west of Washington was killed about 1015 am when he fell from a tractor. He was riding on the right rear fender when a fender broke and he was struck under the wheel and a spreader. He died at Washington county hospital from a skull fracture and crushed chest. Funeral arrangements pending likely Monday or Tuesday at St James Catholic church with Rev R J Kinnavey. He was born October 21 1946 and survived by parents four sisters and one brother and two sets of grandparents.

All-Time July Fourth Weekend Traffic Toll Seen

Traffic fatalities rose on the first full day of the July 4 weekend with 11 deaths and one drowning reported. The National Safety Council projected 430 deaths by Monday midnight, far above past three day records, as 40 million cars expected on hot roads. A Mahwah NJ crash killed four from one family when their car hit an empty bus. Fireworks injuries followed a bootleg cherry bomb incident in New York injuring 9-year-old Stephen Tierney after an 18-year-old pair set it off, court action pending.

Represent County At State RYP Camp

Shirley Petratt of Washington and Gerald Howell of Crawfordsville will attend the State Rural Young Peoples Leadership camp at the state 4 H camping center in Boone county August 1 6. The six day camp will be attended by more than 100 delegates of rural young peoples the state. Scholarships covering most camp expenses have been awarded to each delegate for the first time this year. The grants come from the Sears Foundation to promote a state leadership camp. The camp will train rural young people to take on leadership roles in their home communities.

Farm Prices Decline Nine Percent in June

Iowa producers saw a nine percent drop in prices for all farm products in the second half of June per the Iowa Crop and Livestock Reporting Service. The livestock index fell 27 points, poultry and eggs declined, dairy remained steady, hogs down 3.50 per 100 pounds, beef cattle off 20 cents, calves down 1.30, lambs up 50 cents, corn up 2 cents, wheat down 12, oats 2, soybeans 9.
