End of the Draft and the Case for Compulsory Service
The piece argues the draft should return in wartime and be more democratic than volunteers. It critiques the voluntary system, notes inevitable loopholes, and predicts that in peace, minorities and those with private-economy job challenges will fill ranks, while a future war would bring broader, more affluent participation under a draft.

Medicare expansion opens benefits to disabled workers and families
The federal government will spend about 24.2 billion on Medicare this year with Medicare alone near 12 billion, up 26 percent from last year. Nearly 1.5 million disabled workers newly eligible for coverage begin this month, extending to disabled widows and disabled mothers aged 50 to 65, and to kidney transplant or dialysis patients who worked enough to be insured. Also covered are insured workers' spouses and dependent children. A booklet explaining the expansion is available at Social Security offices.
