Virginia Burnado, 29, claimed her auto rammed through a wall and halted inside a barroom after failing to stop. She explained to shocked patrons she was simply coming down the street when the car wouldn’t stop.
James T. McCabe, Democratic candidate for state senator from Washington and Henry counties, spoke at the Washington county Democratic party convention. He denounced the Republican Iowa administration, urged a progressive education program, and proposed a Legislative Council to save tax dollars. He called for accountability in highway and liquor policies and urged modernization of Iowa procedures.Delegates were named to state conventions during the event.
Five masked robbers armed with a machinegun and pistols stole 347,000 from the Ashland State Bank in Chicago after opening today at 9 a.m. They escaped in a green Cadillac. A Brink's truck arrival five minutes later missed the haul. No one was hurt. Bank officials and a newsroom cited the loss as 347,000 with the total still being tallied.
Kay Matsumiya 22 of Lion Falls South Dakota died in a head on crash near Cherokee when his eastbound car struck a westbound vehicle driven by Henry Tingle 63 as he attempted to turn into a farm lane. Passenger George H Yasuda 36 of Orem Utah was in serious condition. Tingle had minor injuries.
A 15 day interim government led by Col Elfergo Monzon and Col Carlos Armas will run Guatemala after a provisional truce signed in San Salvador ends 14 days of revolt. Other anti communist leaders join the junta as elections are planned and a new constitution drafted.
Senate Democratic Leader Lyndon B. Johnson joined Republican leader William Knowland in opposing admitting Red China to the United Nations. Johnson urged a long, hard look at a possible new U.S. foreign policy direction and said Americans will not support appeasement of the Communists if China is seated. McCarran pushed a resolution to withdraw the U.N. and all U.N. activities unless Red China is excluded.
Members of the Washington County Young Republican organization held their county convention at the courthouse and elected officers for two years. Robert Miller of Crawfordsville was named president. other officers include Mrs. Keith Norton as vice president and Mrs. Kenneth Higdon as secretary. Delegates to the state convention in Des Moines on July 22 were Bill Day, Dick Knupp, Bob Miller, Mrs Norton, William McGinnis, and others with several alternates named.
Washington Senate leaders blocked a move by Senator Paul H. Douglas to add a larger tax break for farmers to the administration's tax reform bill. The amendment aimed to ease purchase of new tractors and farm machinery but failed to secure a final vote late Thursday night.
County Red Cross members elected officers and reported at the annual Washington county chapter meeting in the courthouse. A. E. Baldrige was named chairman with For rest D. Walker as vice chairman and Eugene Engel as treasurer.

Senator Len Hugh Butler of Nebraska died of a massive cerebral hemorrhage at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Virginia after a stroke. The 76 year old Republican left the Senate with a 47 47 1 composition and a pending GOP governor appointment to restore the margin. The Senate adjourned after learning of his passing and planned eulogies before resuming the tax bill debate.

Traffic experts predicted up to 40 million vehicles on the roads over the three day period with a possible 430 deaths, while a new federal fireworks law aimed to curb misuse. Weather varied from heat waves in the Southeast and Southwest to cooler conditions in the Northwest with pleasant conditions in the Midwest and East Coast.
