Futrell notes gradual improvement in the economy with a 1971 GNP forecast of about 7 percent above 1970 after a strong first quarter driven by auto sales and housing. Unemployment remains around 6 percent, inflationary pressures persist, and a potential steel strike could temper growth while agriculture faces steady demand but tighter farm input costs.
