Johnson challenges Hanoi for peace talks during Midwest tour

President Johnson, in Omaha and Des Moines, warns Hanoi to seek peace or face continued bombing in North Viet Nam. He states Air Strikes will continue and offers to negotiate at short notice with no agenda or prior understanding. Holiday notices follow about July 4 observances and post office closures.

Johnson campaigns in Iowa farms amid heat and hog pens

President Johnson toured a 1270 acre Diehl farm south of Des Moines in 90 degree heat visiting cattle barns and a hog pen with Lady Bird. He spoke at a Des Moines fundraising dinner and discussed farm policy with Gov. Hughes and other Midwest Democrats. A later stop in Indianola featured a 17 year old girl with a Black Angus heifer and a friendly greeting.

Drowning Death in Ottumwa Well Gas Incident

An Ottumwa man named Eugene Red Daniels, about 35 to 40, drowned after being overcome by swamp gas during well cleaning west of the city. Firefighter Joe Pollock narrowly escaped the same fate while rescuing Daniels. Pollock was treated at a nearby hospital.

Motorcyclist Killed By Train Near Dakota City

Robert Dale Hanson, 28, of rural Humboldt, died when his motorcycle failed to stop at a county road crossing south of Dakota City as a freight train struck him. Four riders were traveling. the others crossed and warned him. The 1966 Iowa traffic toll reached 356, 24 more than last year on this date.

Three men to speak at union service

Three local men will deliver five minute talks at the union service this Sunday evening at 7 30 p.m. in Central Park.
