Governor vetoes truck bill in Iowa

Iowa Governor Harold E. Hughes vetoed a 1965 legislative bill that would have removed size and weight limits on trucks, transferring authority to issue oversize permits to the Iowa Highway Commission and local authorities. Attorney General Scalise ruled the measure unconstitutional, warning it delegated broad powers without standards. Hughes cited highway safety and statewide concern, vetoing the bill on his return from Europe and noting his doubt about constitutionality. The action came as he had signed 37 other measures, including tax and commerce reforms.

Claims rise threaten MAA funding for Iowa aid program

Des Moines UPI reports Iowa officials warn the $4 million annual MA A appropriation for 1965-67 may be insufficient as claims rise. Irene Smith notes projected monthly funds of about $333,333 could cover full approved doctor hospital and nursing home claims, but pro rating or vendor cuts may be needed if costs exceed. Claimants and claims increased steadily from January through April 1965, with April marking a sharp jump. The board still awaits tax and demand signals before deciding on next steps.
