E G Schroeder Iowa athletic director reports Slip Madigan says Hawkeye grid coach has secured gas money to drive from Oakland California to Iowa City and is expected to arrive with his family next Wednesday evening.
Muscatine Iowa. Lt. Gov. of New York Joe R. Hanley will arrive Saturday night to be with his critically ill mother. He cancelled a Sunday engagement to speak at the Centerville Methodist church where he previously served as pastor.
Franklin County led Iowa in the fifth war loan drive with 112 percent of its quota. Franklin County investors put $1,005,653 into bonds by June 26 against a $898,000 target, according to state war finance committee members.
Des Moines. George Has kell, head of the state war manpower commission, says the new manpower control plan takes effect today and will aid in locating 6,000 workers for essential industry in Iowa. The plan mandates that all non agricultural employers hire only male applicants with referral cards from the US Employment Service.

Soviet forces push across the Berezina river from positions near Minsk racing toward Warsaw and Berlin. The third army breached Minsk outer defenses and advanced 19 miles west while Borisov street fighting continued and Slutsk fell, placing the Red Army within 50 miles east of Baranowicze gap. Rokosovsky pushes west through the Pripet marshes toward Luninets.
Dean Cox son of Mr and Mrs Ray Cox is reported missing in action since June 21 over Germany. His crew from a Flying Fortress began combat service in England and may have landed in Germany making them prisoners of war if confirmed. Also Sgt Robert E Keyser and Lt Earl Richardson are reported missing or prisoners of war reflecting broader wartime casualties in Washington County.
Allied air forces bombarded northern France as weather improved, with Mosquito aircraft striking Ruhr oil works and heavy bombers hitting Vierza rail center south of Orleans. American troops reportedly seized three villages at the Cherbourg peninsula tip as fighting there ends per German claims.

Mrs James Campbell of Los Angeles California reports the death of her husband about ten years ago and of her son Edward Morgan of Washington who died a few years ago.
Two cars driven by George Norman and Alva Lowder sideswiped last night near Brighton road five miles southwest of town. Norman is hospitalized in Washington county hospital with a possible skull fracture pending X rays. No serious injuries to passengers in either car.

Patricia Ann Edwards four year old daughter of Merle and Julia Huffstatler Edwards died yesterday in Alliance Nebraska after a week of illness. Funeral services will be held in Washington with the funeral party arriving this afternoon. She was born October 16 1939 in Washington. Survived by her parents a three year old brother Eugene and grandmother Nellie M Edwards of Washington. Funeral arrangements are with L A Jones funeral home.
Delegates including Mrs. Jeanette McElhinney and Dr. Fred Reid endorse the 1944 Republican platform. They pledge support for a maximum war effort to hasten victory and allow servicemen and servicewomen to return home as soon as possible. The resolutions cover party unity and commitments from the convention.
