Britain seeks Western aid to boost economy after French blockade
Prime Minister Harold Macmillan urged faster trade talks with the United States and Europe as Britain faces economic strain. He blamed France and Charles de Gaulle for blocking the Brussels talks on Common Market membership, urging unity with the Western alliance and a US aligned Europe. France responsiveness was uncertain, with Monnet warning the mutual confidence necessary for any agreement was eroded. De Gaulle’s plans for an independent Europe were expected to continue despite tempers cooling.
