Wayland residents faced a second derailment as a freight train released a car during a flying switch at 6 30 pvt on Wednesday. The car struck another string of cars loaded with salvaged corn from an overturned unit, pushing eastward and derailing near the creamery crossing. A later incident near Winfield damaged three small bridges before the train came to rest.
U S air force confirms Communist radar controlled anti aircraft guns used to threaten UN warplanes. Ground fire rose sharply but allied jets continued targets as Maj William Waltman notes limited night use with searchlights. no losses reported.
George and Dorothy Nash of Brighton were bound over to Jefferson County grand jury after a preliminary hearing for larceny of corn from Albert Reininger farm on December 19. Each is free on $100 bond awaiting the next grand jury term.
Loy Scouts and scouting officials and families invited to the annual Washington Scouting district potluck dinner on Thursday evening February 7 at the Washington United Presbyterian church. Dinner starts promptly at 6 45 p m.
Washington aup Hershey urged Congress to start a Universal Military Training program now and run it alongside the draft. He said draftees would enter active service after training rather than reserves, while Vinson argued enough 18 year olds could be spared to place universes in reserves after six months training to build a trained pool and reduce the standing force.
CALRO Egypt Premier Aly Maher Pasha signals willingness to negotiate with Britain. A foreign office spokesman says he will accept proposals meeting Egypt's national goals as Mustapha El Nahas Pasha joins a national front. The government reshuffles security posts and warns authorities will act to prevent unrest. A district court case recalls oil torch lighting in mills from January 8.
About 36 farmers attended a Washington High School session in the vocational agriculture room to hear Eugene Franeis, Iowa State College sheep expert. He warned the near term may be tough but a strong role with other livestock remains. He noted lamb demand should rise with steady consumption and praised sheep as a good roughage feeder with strong returns per dollar. He urged pasture rotation to reduce worm issues in lambs. The next adult farm class is set for February 13 with Rex Beresford to discuss beef problems. a meeting follows next Wednesday.
Merle Bryson, a capable driver who cannot pilot planes, sues Louis Heeren of Hawarden in district court to cancel a trade of a car for an airplane. Bryson claims he was intoxicated at the time of the exchange on December 14 and did not understand the consequences of his act.
Des Moines Iowa Fire Marshal Zack Cook reported numerous fire hazards in 14 state institutions including hospitals homes and penal facilities during annual inspections. Governor Beardsley said the board of control and institution heads must act, with expected costs from four to four million dollars for full compliance and major repairs needing potential appropriations.
The Music Boosters club hosted a well attended home talent show in the Wellman high school gym. Funds from the event paid for a piano, aided by a prior bake sale that raised 3141.60. Five prize entries were judged by Irvin Rieh and Leonard Wokesh. first went to Dorothy Brown and Lorna Ruegsegger, tied for top honors with aerobatic numbers.
President Truman announced he will withdraw in the New Hampshire presidential primary saying no point in entering a preferential race. He warned he would not enter any primaries if he runs again and noted he has ten days to remove his name from the ballot. Kefauver remains sole Democratic candidate in the state.
Czechoslovakia condemned the U S attack on the imprisonment of Associated Press correspondent William N Oatis calling it counter to human rights Jiri Hajek accused Oatis of espionage and training in a U S army school Tobias defended the trial as just and said Oatis confessed to good reporting while claiming torture occurred during detention and trial.
The Chicago health board shuttered the Blackhawk in the Loop and the Streamliner after inspectors found horsemeat in samples from both eateries. Blackhawk management cited voluntary closure for emergency repairs and pledged a forthcoming clean bill of health from city inspectors.

Joe Pease campaign chairman urges residents to listen for the whistle and turn on porch lights if they wish to contribute. Junior Chamber of Commerce members will pick up contributions.
Iowa storage figures show January 1 totals for corn, oats, and wheat with declines from the prior year. The Commodity Credit Corporation stocks are noted as higher, while overall corn in storage is down compared with January 1, 1951, and near record lows for the period.
The Washington Boy Scouts plan to run the city government for one day during National Scout Week February 6 to 12. Roger Booth and Ted Thornton are the mayoral candidates with voting next Wednesday night at City Hall.

In Seattle burglars moved a heavy safe to a loft, broke it with a sledgehammer, and recovered $20. Company officials said the safe was unlocked at all times.
Wellman hosts a joint installation of Pythian Sisters and Knights of Pythias at the Masonic Hall on Monday evening January 28. Officers installed include Hildra Schmeltzer, Opal Bickford, Ruth Bringaman, and Will Cupp with Fairfield attendees Cloyece Cummings and John Lind presiding. The event featured music and refreshments.
