The battleship Missouri and rocket ships led a daylong bombardment of Kansong on Korea's east coast, while UN forces attacked Kangnung nearby. In the west, 8th Army advances toward Seoul slowed as heavy fighting with entrenched enemy troops continued and casualties mounted.
The Jefferson-Washington Dairy Herd Improvement Association schedules its first annual meeting on Thursday February 1 at the Farm Bureau building. A noon potluck precedes an afternoon business session with extension dairyman Joseph Hineman from Ames assisting with farm records. Washington County members include Earl Davis Ted Meyers Howard Meclery Virgil Long Emil Peifer Lawrence Whetstine Raymond Hammon and Delbert Lewis.
A 10 year old crippled boy identified as David Hawkin died from burns suffered when he jumped into a bathtub to escape a fire in his home. Neighbors found him partially in a filled tub with burned clothing, and he died about 11 p.m. after the accident.
The YWCA chorus for young adult women meets for its first practice this Thursday at 7 pm in the YWCA room. Applicants are urged to attend. Director is Mrs Warren Dare with Phyllis Willey as accompanist. The group is sponsored by the YWCA young adult committee chaired by Charlotte Earll.

Tonight remains very cold with lows from 15 below in the north to 5 below in the south. Wednesday brings highs from 5 north to 10 south with light winds. Dean Floyd Andre, new Dean of Agriculture at Iowa State College, will be the featured speaker at the Iowa Staters club annual banquet at the Washington YMCA. The event Thursday evening February 8 begins at 6 30 and tickets cost 1.25 dollars. Joining him are Murl McDonald Louise Rosenfeld and Dr. George Stewart from extension and experiment station staff. Mrs. Robert Nash, a rural schoolteacher near Little Rock Iowa, guided 17 pupils to safety after noticing smoke from a radiator as fire swept the classroom. She raced a quarter mile to alert firefighters, who contained the blaze despite strong winds and sub zero conditions.
Attorney L J Kehoe announces the Rock Island railroad hearing is postponed to February 9. The state commerce commission had set February 7 and reported the delay. Lavern Linnenkamp of Harper will register today at St Ambrose college in Davenport for the February 5 term, transferring from Iowa State Teachers College and visiting parents.
The Iowa Senate opened debate on a bill to revoke gambling licenses and bar restoration for at least a year. Sen. Devere Watson proposed amendments to exempt clubs and bingo or ken o games. the chamber rejected restoring licenses early 30 to 15. House actions included tax exemption bills and limits on attorney commentary in criminal cases.
Three candidates received the rank of knight at the Knights of Pythias lodge meeting presided by Ralph Martin. Esquire will be conferred next Monday night with practice sessions planned Sunday afternoon at 2. A box supper fundraiser is planned by the ways and means committee. Pythian Sisters provided refreshments.
Washington residents shivered as temperatures dipped to nine below. The official reading contrasted with prior lows of fourteen below from Sunday night, highlighting a continued deep freeze in the area.

North-south runners-up were Cal Wolfe and Tom Stewart. east-west second were Elsie Glassburner and Mrs. FE EK Stutsman. Third place went to R. B. DeLa and Manton Hebner. Mrs John Hedberg Sr 69 mother of John Hedberg of Washington died at Kewanee Hospital after strokes last week and days before her death Funeral services were unavailable as of today She is survived by her son and daughter Mrs Forrest Ringstrom of Kewanee and two grandchildren
Washington reports the wage-stabilization board ready to approve increases for 450,000 United Mine Workers at a $1.60 daily rise starting Thursday. Deadlock persists on a wage formula while price controls target dealer margins and alerts warn of scarce materials for April to June.
Washington firemen were called to the Milwaukee railroad station last night about 9 o'clock but found no fire. Men in the station detected a gaslike odor and summoned the fire department as a precaution.
A frigid Iowa night set a winter record with Decorah registering 43 below, near the state coldest mark. Elkader saw 40 below, while Mason City 26 below and other cities ranged from 16 to 25 below as a gradual warming trend began but five day outlook stayed 10 to 15 below normal.
City of Washington proclaims Wednesday January 31 as official fire inspection day. Mayor G E Mace urges property owners and tenants to allow inspectors free access to premises in cooperation with local groups and Iowa Fire Prevention Association.
Arrangements for a city wide fire inspection in Washington were announced by Les Hamil secretary of the Chamber of Commerce. Inspections of all local business houses will finish by Wednesday January 31 led by Iowa Fire Prevention Association teams with headquarters at the YMCA. A joint Rotary Kiwanis luncheon will feature a speaker from Iowa Fire Prevention Association.
School Board President E L Edmondson signed contracts with three Oskaloosa firms to build the Brighton high school gym auditorium at a total estimated cost of 132,? rounding. General work by Garden Engineering Service. plumbing by H G Brown Co. electrical by another Oskaloosa firm. Completion is planned for September 15, 1951, on the former Porter property west of the high school. Funding came from a recent Brighton bond issue of 49,000 dollars. Government approvals may affect start date pending authorities in Oskaloosa.
Leonard Tindal director of the farmers evening class announced the square dance scheduled for this week has been postponed to Wednesday night February 7 at the high school.
Local Boy Scout troops in the Washington district prepare a week of events for National Scout Week. Activities include officer nominations for city positions, a potluck supper and Court of Honor, a union church service, and special window displays around the square.
All Masons urged to attend the lodge for third degree work on Wednesday January 31 at 8 o'clock in the lodge hall.
Washington reported the defense department rejected proposals to draft men beyond 25 but warned that men of all ages might be taken in future. Assistant defense secretary Anna M. Rosenberg told the House armed services committee the 19 through 25 group is the economical training target. Members suggested lifting the draft age to delay 18 year old conscription.
Iowa Selective Service director Col. Ralph A Lancaster said at least one Iowa man has been drafted and others possibly drafted after marrying during the Korean War. The 1-A classified man married last July after the war began, and Lancaster argued voluntary marriage should not be a deferment basis. He noted several newly married Iowans also classified 1-A, though induction status is unknown.
Congress and defense officials debate expanding the draft pool by including men who married after the Korean War began last June. States report married men have been called 1-A, while others resist. Some propose raising the draft age to 28 or 30 and delaying 18-year-old conscriptions.
