A Des Moines price office official says bakeries may not request consumers sugar for icings on purchased cakes. The practice violates the sugar rationing order and is not permitted for both the consumer and the bakery.
Des Moines report notes Johnston Lions Club will hold its charter night ceremony at the Johnston school. H. B. Johnson of Davenport district governor will present the charter. Chester J. Sturtman serves as president and Royal Manny as secretary treasurer. The club was sponsored by the Waukee Lions unit.
Ottumwa resident Charles Eaves aged 51 sustained serious injuries when struck by a car that drove onto the scene. The incident occurred with a grandson present, and investigators described the vehicle as involved in the crash.
Arnold Nibe 03 Newton painter struck a car while turning off high tly near the east city limits. Jas per County Sheriff Ray Barber jailed Nibe on a charge of driving while intoxicated. Nibe waived to the grand jury from Justice James Engle's court and was released on $500 appearance bond.
The Iowa Optometric Association expected 300 attendees for its March 28 to 30 convention in Des Moines. License renewal requires completing an educational program at the annual meeting or its equivalent, and an application has been sent to Washington for permission to hold the event.
Members of the Town house of representatives reported considerable pressure over the weekend from chosen people in their home communities to vote for the local option beer bill. The measure, to be considered today in the house, would let each county city town or township decide by ballot whether beer should be sold within their borders.
Telegram informs Paul and Mrs Moore that their son Private Tom P Moore was seriously wounded in action in Belgium on January 12. Tom attended Washington High School three years, graduated Ames High last spring, enlisted June 2, went overseas December 12, and recently the family moved back to Ames.
Moscow says Marshal Zhukov led four armored spearheads into Brandenburg along a 100 mile invasion front. Russian columns crossed from Poland toward Berlin with flanks pressing Breslau and Danzig. Berlin observers note Frankfurt on the Oder as a new objective as fighting rages around Poznan and bridges on the Vistula.
James Havel won first prize in a special class for Jonny ears of corn at the WHO National Ear Corn show during the eighth annual National Radio Corn Festival in Des Moines. Don Radda of Washington entered in regular and bridged classes, placing third in bridged with Pioneer brid 330, and sixth in open for best five ears.
Don Ratda exits after being barred from the io rule following his two prior National Championship Trophy wins. Sfarry Stevens from Missouri takes the WI National Grand Championship Trophy this year as the champion determined by total points.
Fire department responded before noon to 116 West Third Street at the Elam Johnson home for a small roof fire. Minor damage reported with shingles burned.
A meeting for all Nurses Aides course candidates, the sponsoring committee and instructors is set for Thursday at the Y M C A rooms. Mrs George Morrison urges applicants to obtain blanks before noon Thursday. Mrs Lawrence Malley will teach the class. The course covers 35 hours of class work and 45 hours of hospital training. Attendance is urged to decide class numbers and schedule.
A letter dated January 17 from Leyburn Mike Lewis T/5 in a French hospital reports serious abdominal wounds on January 9 but says he is getting along and in good spirits. His parents Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lewis have been advised of his overseas service exceeding two years.
American forces press toward Manila with 33 miles to the capital after a two pronged advance on Luzon. B29s hammer Iwo Jima and Tokyo targets as carrier planes strike Palembang oil refineries. Japanese retreat toward Bataan as observers expect Manila liberation within weeks. Carrier task force attacked Palembang again with two carriers and escorts. Reports claim submarines reached the U.S. west coast and sank three transports and an oil tanker.
The Church of Christ held a mortgage burning after a cooperative dinner in the social rooms with about 117 attendees. Rev. Vernon Carter of Marion delivered the afternoon message to a crowd of around 200, as Dr. J. A. Dillinger spoke and music featured Ellanor Tucker and Miss Tucker.
Charles Barclay resigns from his post as assistant cashier at the Washington State bank after a 14 year tenure as an officer and 21 years with the bank. Mr and Mrs Barclay and family are mentioned in the note.
The West Point 4H Club hosts a model business meeting and induction ceremony at the YMCA during the officers training school. S. A. Ossian directs parliamentary rules. Wade Gardner explains ceremonials to 4H officers. 26 girls and 21 boys attend, with Crooked Creek Cyclones fully present.
Airmen and RAF bombers hit six German rail yards and the Kassel tank works producing Panther and Tiger tanks. The raid involved over 6,000 heavy bombers including 1,150 US Fortresses and Liberators with Mustang escorts, following a night RAF attack and a prior daylight US raid on Kassel area targets.
Washington Jan 29 The Office of Price Administration announced an overriding ceiling of 17.25 to 18.60 per hundredweight for live cattle to curb black markets and price squeezes. The rule covers 10 market centers and 24 market areas with exemptions for breeding or commercial stock and youths in 4H clubs. Top centers listed include St. Joseph 17.65 and St. Louis 17.90.
The report lists clubs present including eluded Dutch Creek Fliers High landers Washington Hustlers West Point club and the Pleasant Hill Boosters. Two officers were missing from Jackson Boys Cedar Chips Riverside Ramblers Dutch Creek girls club and Farmerettes. Other clubs included Headliners Merry Makers of Rubio Cedar Clippers Northernite Clover Leaf Good Luck and the Franklin club.
Allied forces report the 1st Army stormed remaining German pockets in eastern Belgium reaching Louver Horlu and Bullange area amid knee deep snow. Brig. Gen. Clift Andrus’ division seized Bullange and nearby villages, tallying 100 Germans captured and 100 killed. broader operations include Herresbach and Mendenorf with additional towns secured as German withdrawal halted by Allied air assaults.
Skirmishing continued in the fight over Roosevelt's designation of former Vice President Henry A. Wallace as Secretary of Commerce but formal Senate consideration was delayed until at least midweek.
The University of Iowa war records office reports a service roll of 8640 alumni and former students in the armed forces, up nearly 26 percent in a month. It lists 138 casualties, with more than half dying in action or in enemy prison camps.
Richard R. Johnston began work as supervisor for the Farm Security Administration with headquarters at Marengo. He leads FSA operations in Johnson and Iowa counties after a recent Army discharge and a temporary PSA assignment at Maquoketa. He previously supervised FSA work in Buchanan County with offices in Independence.
