Residents in Washington and others as far as West Chester reported a loud boom at about 5 PM Thursday. No explosion was found, and many believe a sonic boom caused the disturbance.
President Carter will address the nation in a 20 minute telecast from the White House on Wednesday night and outline his domestic and foreign policy goals. A first televised news conference is planned likely for February 7, announced Press Secretary Jody Powell.
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ordered a new trial for former UMW President W A Boyle after ruling the 1973 trial erred by not admitting testimony from federal auditor Thomas Kane. Boyle had been convicted in the murders of insurgent Joseph Yablonski and his wife and daughter after a bid for UMW presidency.
In Cedar Rapids a predawn fire killed 75 year old Jack Thorn and injured his sisters Gertrude Marquardt 83 and Susie Case 86. Thorn died at St Luke's Hospital while Marquardt was listed in fair condition and Case in critical condition. Fire officials blamed careless smoking and noted the blaze lasted over an hour in extreme cold and high winds.
Des Moines report from UPI notes Iowa birds are weathering winter well due to little snow and ample food, while fish suffer from drought earlier in the year and ongoing subzero temperatures. Water levels dropped and many lakes froze deeply, reducing oxygen for fish.
President Carter says Washington and Moscow should lead reductions in nuclear weapons and new war arsenal additions. He plans to study the B1 bomber’s cost and capability and review other weapons before deciding this spring on full production.
Fire swept the Stafford Hotel in Breckenridge Minnesota during 25 below zero cold. More than 20 people were unaccounted for after the blaze and may have taken refuge in nearby buildings. A radio dispatcher said there were 20 unaccounted residents and it was unclear if all escaped.

The groom Mark Gearin of Washington and bride Charlotte Thompson of Keota wed in the Washington County Jail basement before a small crowd. Gearin, 20, is jailed on a parole violation after serving time for a 1974 breaking and entering conviction. The ceremony, likely a local jail record, was performed by Rev. Bruce Klapp as officials watched. Gearin faces transfer to Anamosa to serve a 10 year sentence, with parole hoped within months. The couple, who had dated since 1974, plan to reunite after his release to raise their family.
Aspen report says probation officer Terry Norris recommends Claudine Longet receive no more than 30 days in Garfield County jail on nonconsecutive days for negligent homicide in the Vladimir Sabich death. Norris calls her a low risk first offender and says prison time is unnecessary to protect her three children.
Vice President Walter Mondale landed at Orly Airport near Paris aboard Air Force Two for the final leg of his European tour. He was met by French official Jean-Francois Poncet and is set to meet Friday with Emile Van Lennep, secretary general of the OECD.
