President Eisenhower told Congress high price supports harm farmers. He called for a flexible farm program with supports from 50 to 90 percent of parity, warning current laws leave agriculture with surpluses and heavy controls while large commercial farms gain most and poorer families gain little.
High School Honor Students Named Honor roll for the third six weeks at Washington High School have been announced by Principal M. Robert Everett. The auto license department in the office of W. F. Howell, county treasurer, was busy as car owners crowded to beat the January 30 deadline for new registration certificates to avoid penalties. Workers expect a steady stream of customers through the week.
Senate Republican leaders met with President Eisenhower to discuss the Bricker amendment and a potential administration announcement. William F. Knowland said an official statement would come between 1 and 2 p.m. CST, but Hagerty noted no letter from the President accompanied Knowland on departure. Eisenhower previously stated he remains opposed to current Bricker amendment sections.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles charged that Soviet Russia seeks to wreck the United Nations by creating a five power world rule including Red China. He denounced Mao Tse tung and Chou En Lai for human misery and warned Molotov against demanding a five power conference. Dulles urged ministers to drop the Red China demand and focus on Germany and Austria treaties while noting no sign of compromise on Korea and Indochina talks.
Beardsley named a 12 member unemployment study committee at Cedar Rapids to seek more defense contracts for Iowa and address farm income driven unemployment. He urged a Waterloo meeting early next week for immediate job creation and named industry and labor representatives to the panel. President Eisenhower offered an optimistic economic forecast, pledging swift action if needed to sustain growth and proposing higher unemployment benefits and a higher minimum wage as part of a broad prosperity program.
Washington city sirens and patrol car lights will signal the start of the annual March of Dimes porch light campaign at 6 50 p m. Jaycees and wives will canvass at 6 30 p m aiming to finish in about an hour. Residents are urged to display a lit porch light at 6 50 p m to contribute. Kenneth Patterson home at 711 South Fourth avenue serves as headquarters.
Mrs. C H Reed announces F E Skola of Kalona as head of the cancer control fund drive for Washington county. Last year the county exceeded its quota under Skola. John J Williams praises Skola and Iowa’s top ACS standing while Skola vows an April crusade combining education and fundraising to combat cancer locally and through research.
Merle M Thayer of Davenport will reunite with his sister Jeannette in Chicago this Saturday after 19 years apart since their adoption from an Ohio orphanage. The Iowa State Welfare Board helped locate her through foster parents. Jeannette is married with several children. Thayer will be joined by his wife and brother Benjamin on the trip.
Panorama Park Iowa UP former town clerk Mrs Cleo Ohm surrendered the town seal and treasury 4 74 to Mayor Howard Lennon ending a one month dispute over who held city government rights The disagreement centered on an oath of office not taken in time by Lennon and his council who claimed authority from 1953 elections.
Fred Bourgeois announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination to remain Washington County Auditor in the coming primary. Appointed in May 1946 to complete Stan Kiesey's term, Bourgeois has since been re elected and previously served as deputy auditor from 1941 to 1946. He formerly lived in Kalona where he was postmaster and worked at the Kalona News. He attends the Christian church, LOOK lodge and serves on the YMCA board.
In Berlin the East German Communists charged that travelers in the Soviet Zone can open each other’s trunks and suitcases because all keys and locks are standardized, a claim prompting concern over security and privacy.
Vatican reports Pope Pius XII, 77, improving after a rest prescribed by his physician. Fever has disappeared and coughing eased. Public audiences suspended for at least a week. the Pope still said Mass privately and handled Vatican business.

The Y's Men's club sponsored Mardi Gras at the Washington YMCA opens tonight at 7 p.m. with carnival features including a side show vaudeville acts and food booths promising family entertainment for tonight and Friday night.
Des Moines reports Billy E. Clark 2 percent of near Dallas a prisoner of the Communists in Korea for 13 months intends to reenlist. He becomes the fourth Iowan to decide to reenlist after Korea service.
Washington County plans a county wide mobile chest X ray survey in the week of February 15. The effort is sponsored by the Washington County Tuberculosis and Health Association with support from the Washington County Medical Society and is funded by the Iowa TB and Health Association and the State Health Department. General chairman is G F E Mace with Mrs R J Kleese as public information chair. Each community will host a mobile unit offering free X rays to adults and students grade seven and up. The process is simple and confidential with results mailed about three weeks after screening and larger films if abnormal shadows appear.
The Methodist church Men’s club, about 100 members, met last evening to hear Warden Percy Lains on of Fort Madison. Illness and bad roads kept him away, so motion pictures were shown. The program featured goose migration, Canadian park scenes, and a Bible story produced by the American Bible. A smorgasbord dinner was prepared by James Birney’s committee, and a brief worship service was led by Sam Bowser.
The Senate Banking and Currency Committee launches a second probe alongside the FTC inquiry into rising coffee prices. Chairman Homer Capehart will name a five member subcommittee to run the Senate investigation. President Eisenhower announced the FTC will broaden its inquiry.
Atty General Leo Hoegh ruled the new State Board of Public Instruction cannot fix the salary of superintendent Jessie Parker or two assistants until July 1, 1955. He said the Legislature’s $7,000 appropriation controls the pay and the board cannot exceed that limit.
In Memphis Tennessee Bill Johnson was excused from jury duty in a damage suit after describing himself as a magician and mind reader. The juror declared his profession in court and was released from service.
