Street light at Main Street and North Second Avenue now flashes red in all directions matching the Washington and Second Avenue signal. Drivers must come to a full stop before proceeding when the signal flashes red.
Julia Gamon of the Extension office says meetings for Washington County 4H members involved in sheep and horse projects were canceled. The sessions had been set for Thursday night.
The Iowa Department of Transportation in Ames seeks bids on a 7.6 mile asphalt resurfacing of highway 218 from the north Washington County line into Iowa City. Proposals due February 1 with October 1977 completion. Work includes preparatory tasks, curb removal, railing installation at select spots, and shoulder improvements tying to Washington County sections.
Washington Iowa based Trooper Cal Dorsett has been temporarily removed from the payroll as Internal Affairs investigates. Deputy Commissioner Robert G. Holetz said no disciplinary action has been taken yet and no replacement is in Washington. If the probe is favorable, Dorsett will return to duty with back pay.
Three Milwaukee juveniles are in custody in Monona County Iowa after a car they were in allegedly struck service station operator Dwight Metcalf as they fled without paying. The car, reported stolen, was intercepted east of Onawa. Metcalf was treated at an Onawa hospital and is in good condition. Charges pending against the trio.
Ohio Gov James A Rhodes urged prayer for relief from the energy shortage and lifted restrictions on high-sulfur fuels, as cold fronts sweep the Midwest and South. The fuel crunch idles hundreds of thousands, with plants furloughed, refineries reopening, and governors seeking federal action while utilities cut gas to homes and businesses.
Dr A C Peterson retired Washington veterinarian was appointed Tuesday night to fill a vacancy on the Washington County board of assessment review by the conference board. The board will hear property tax appeals in May and Peterson will serve a four year term replacing Stan Kiesey.
Washington County Extension Service sponsors a February 3 meeting at 7 30 p m in the Washington YMCA Community Room. Eldon Haas and Jim Frier will discuss fertilizer values and pollution regulations from liquid swine wastes alongside waste handling systems. A hog producer panel will share management and use of liquid wastes.
Vice President Walter Mondale arrived in Rome after a Berlin stop where he described the wall as a tool to trap people and pledged the United States would stand by Berlin with whatever means necessary. He met West Berlin officials, urged freedom and democracy, and conveyed President Carter's commitment to Berlin's security.
Washington officials admit snow removal is a costly balance between fiscal restraint and keeping streets clear. Mayor Harold Johnson notes taxpayers face tradeoffs as two to three inch snowfalls recur with rapid temperature drops, while Public Works Director Jim Reschly tracks monthly costs from November through January and salt usage rises.
J Wesley Graham of Ida Grove dies Dec 21 1976 leaving the bulk of his estate to a trust for the Salvation Army with annual income to the charity from Ida and Sac Counties farmland valued by experts at about two to three million dollars. Small bequests go to relatives Cornell College Ida Grove Methodist Church and the Christian Home for Children. Five million figure deemed substantially correct by his attorney.
Lake Darling discussions Friday will cover its past present and future with Izaak Walton League organizers urging attendance. The event features a 6 30 p m meal and a 7 30 p m program with state officials conservation officers and local legislators pledging to address lake deterioration and soil erosion potential drainage or land use changes discussed.
The Arctic cold returns to Iowa with a southward snow surge and wind gusts to 50 mph reducing visibility to near zero in places. Temperatures plunge to near zero in the northwest, with 20s in the southeast. A second batch of cold air is expected Thursday night. I-80 fractious conditions persist with multi vehicle pileups and widespread ice and snow on eastern to northeastern corridors.

The Rev. Edward J. Shepherd of St. James Catholic Church goes on a three month leave after a heart attack. Bishop Gerald O Keefe appoints the Rev. Jonathan Simmons as associate pastor and the Rev. Louis Leonhardt as administrator of temporal affairs. Shepherd, hospitalized since January 6, expects a long recovery at home in Burlington.
