Hughes warns reapportionment may go to courts
DES MOINES UPI Gov Harold E Hughes warned that after the 1965 reapportionment plan was set aside the Iowa legislature may wind up in the courts. He said a temporary statutory plan might satisfy the Iowa Supreme Court but federal courts may reject it. The House defeated the 1965 plan in a 37 to 83 vote and the GOP proposal moves to the Senate. Democrats fear delay benefits rural interests and that rejection could push reapportionment into court action. The dispute centers on single member districts and the timing of reapportionment under the Stanley Rigler plan versus the 1965 plan.

UPI report from Tiffin Iowa says 18 year old Charles Herdlicka of Iowa City died in a two car head on collision two miles southwest of Tiffin on a Johnson County road. Larry Downs of Oxford 18 was driver of the other car. Downs and two passengers survived.

Joliet Illinois 7000 plus high school and junior college students faced another holiday as Local 604 of the American Federation of Teachers walked out demanding higher pay. Judge Michael A. Orenic ordered the strike halted and held that it unduly hampered plaintiffs and public interest and barred interference with school services.

Tragic Audubon family perishes from gas fumes
Five members of the Sorensen family were found dead in their rural Audubon County home four miles west of Audubon Iowa. Officials say accidental asphyxiation caused by propane heater fumes entered the house through a blocked chimney. Harold 25 Karen 23 and children Lori 5 Debra 4 Kelvin 3 died overnight. a dog also died. The phone was off the hook when a repairman found them.

Auto giants trim Feb output as 17000 workers face layoffs
