A freight train near Plover was derailed by a deep snow drift less than a mile east of town. The snow weight buckled the plow, and the engine and tender toppled onto their left sides about 40 feet from the track. The fireman and engineer escaped with minor injuries. The brakeman reported his usual position was crushed.
The Strawberry Point Horse Thief Detective association has dissolved after 77 years of operation. The group boasted no member ever lost a horse, had no dues, and elected 12 members annually to be ready to pursue stolen horses belonging to any member.
Dean Mason Ladd of the University of Iowa College of Law is commissioned as a major in the judge advocate general corps and will report for active duty February 1. President Virgil M. Hancher names Prof. Percy Bordwell acting dean during Ladd’s absence. Ladd has led the law school since 1939 and previously practiced in Des Moines with his brother Loy Ladd.
DES MOINES The state on Monday dismissed its appeal from an adverse ruling in a cream grading license revocation case involving L. F. E. Goode Produce Co. of Bloomfield. The suit, led by former Agriculture Secretary Mark G. Thornburg, sought to revoke the company's license by alleging equal pricing for second‑grade and first‑grade cream. The Goode firm, with partners Doran B. and Dean M. Goode, operates in the produce business with state senator Dewey E. involved.
Milo Sorden and Clyde Bowden of Washington receive orders to report at Muscatine Thursday at 10 a.m. to begin a second eight week pilot training course for commissions in the United States army. Orders originate from the Civil Aeronautics Administration training program in St. Louis via Washington.
Chairman Vinson said the House Naval Affairs and Military Affairs committees will investigate William Jeffers’s claim that army and navy loafers hinder the war program. Jeffers spoke in Baltimore about material shortages for synthetic rubber plants, insisting his remarks were extemporaneous and not cleared by OWI.
State commander Dan J. O'Brien of the American Legion attends a Washington visit for the county Legion meeting at the Knights of Pythias rooms. Posts from all county towns are expected, with a 6:30 dinner at Wingas and a lunch service by the Legion Auxiliary for attending members.
Nursell P Miller of Washington Iowa is stationed at the army air forces basic training center in Kearns Utah per Col Converse R Lewis commander. Miller, son of Mr and Mrs G Miller, entered service January 8 1942. Technical training command trains radio operators gunners machinists clerks maintenance men and aircraft mechanics for America's air forces.
Rev. Merle Arthur Robeson resigns as pastor of Bethel and Cotter Presbyterian churches effective Feb. 14 to accept a pastorate in Brooklyn Iowa. Congregational meetings set for Jan. 31 to act on the resignation with Iowa City presbytery to schedule a further meeting. Robeson cites gratitude for community kindness and desire to preserve friendships across both congregations.
The Washington headquarters company of the Iowa state Guard reports three new members at the last drill and two the prior Monday, raising total to 43. The unit hopes to reach 80 soon as prior enlistments declined with members joining U S armed forces. Captain Howard Miller is available for information. The recent company dance at Rendezvous drew about 500 attendees and net over 100 dollars for kitchen equipment, with 80 American flags decorating the hall and Civil Air Patrol and naval aviation cadets in uniform.
The Brooklyn church, a Cathedral type building remodeled in the last two years, serves rural districts with active local organizations and nearby towns like Grinnell. Since 1938 Rev and Mrs Robeson and daughter Betty Anne have resided there.
Under Secretary of War Robert T. Patterson said the postwar army will aid soldiers in finding jobs through a reverse selective service system. He warned millions of demobilized soldiers cannot be guaranteed jobs but the army will strive to prevent men from returning to breadlines.
In Manchester Iowa fire departments battled subzero conditions to control a blaze that damaged a three story brick block housing a bowling alley variety store skating rink and two real estate offices. Residents were driven from upper floor apartments as the fire swept through the business district.

County treasurer warns supply may run short for 1943 license stickers as applications rush in. Only 4155 stickers were sent for Washington County though last year issued plates for 5488 cars. He will train for four weeks and serve as assistant engineer with rank near first lieutenant in the army, possibly in defense areas or lend lease work. His wife will stay with her parents in Lanark Illinois while he serves. The health unit position awaits a successor, and car licensing fees have surged with $3,000 received in three days.
