Iowa Senate considers changes to unemployment laws

Three bills proposed by Sen. Jacob Mincks would drop the one week waiting period for unemployment benefits and liberalize weekly totals. The plan would base benefits on a fixed base, raise averages to 50 and 60 percent in coming years, and later set at two thirds of the $88 base, while removing dependent counts from calculation. A second measure would end the automatic switch to Social Security for workers age 62 when unemployed.
