Twister hits Cochran Georgia town injures many. 150 homeless

Salvage crews worked before dawn to clear wreckage after a tornado ripped through Cochran. At least 16 people were injured and 150 to 200 were left homeless as 20 homes were destroyed and 75 damaged. Sheriff Gus Giddens reported no deaths and noted residents aided by neighbors while rescuers faced crowds of curious onlookers.

Retired Iowa businessman pays overdue state tax

An unidentified Iowa retiree paid 69,905 dollars in back moneys and credits tax on 3,050,000 dollars in savings and investments. 150 Students Compete in Everett Music Event

A steady morning snowfall coated the Washington area with over an inch of new snow. Roads became slick and driving was hazardous in town though highways were not heavily impacted at noon as residents continued cleanup from earlier heavy snow weeks.

Hospital Accused Of Holding Baby Over Bill Dispute

In Atlanta a couple sues Crawford Long Hospital alleging the hospital kept their 3 week old son from them until they pay a $334 bill from the mother’s stay. Judge Durwood Pye ordered the infant brought to court to show cause for the claim.

Polio Fund Drive Continues In Washington County

Progress in the 1958 March of Dimes drive is reported by Chairman Bob Ross of Washington. A house to house canvass is planned for January 30 led by the Washington Jaycees. Washington Junior High boys raised 90 dollars in three hours selling peanuts. Rural mail returns are slow with only 75 of 2,000 letters back. The block of dimes contest between Kiwanis and Rotary was postponed due to snow and will likely be held next Saturday afternoon.

Keota Man Dies at Veterans Hospital

Keota James D. Helscher, 32, died Jan 25 1958 at the Veterans Hospital Iowa City after hospitalization since Jan 20. He ran Bill and Mike's Tavern in Keota.
