Ottumwa column reports that local Chamber of Commerce directors approved resolutions urging additional funds for the Dies Committee investigations of un American activities. The measure emphasizes informing citizens of efforts to overthrow democracy.
Ira Kennedy of Mount Ayr pleads guilty to driving while intoxicated before District Judge O J Henderson. He asks for leniency to marry soon, claiming a quarrel with his fiancee sparked drinking. The judge orders up to 60 days before marriage and a $300 fine unless paid, with time to serve in Webster County jail.
Ernest Schuster a 64 year old Des Moines man died after a hunting accident at the D Schultz farm He was wounded fatally when a shotgun barrel plugged and exploded A fragment entered his left arm and he walked about 300 yards before dying Coroner W Norman Doss of Decatur County ruled the death accidental.
Glenwood. Franklin Bannister, 29, a prominent Mills County farmer, shot and fatally wounded himself as deputies arrested him on arson suspicions. He asked Deputy S V Cooney to park at a tourist camp where he and his wife had lived since their home burned January 9. The deputy heard the gun and found Bannister dead with a self inflicted bullet between the eyes.
DES MOINES. Betty Pontius, 16, suffers a rare blood disease and received her sixth transfusion. Her sister Goldie, 26, donated a pint, aiding Betty who has relied on blood from family members including her eight siblings and father Walter Pontius.
Lester Cronnen of Des Moines resigned as editor of the Town Red Book 1939 40 directory. State Superintendent David K Brown said the sixth district Democratic committeeman had been appointed to edit it but will discontinue. A Republican will take over. successor not named.
Mrs. Wealthy Weaver of Otho will mark her 104th birthday with visitors all day tomorrow. She resides with daughter Mrs. Lottie Green and remains in fair health.
Des Moines reports detail federal grant totals for state institutions. University of Town athletic field 22,950 dollars and dormitories 90,000 for men and 141,750 for women. radio education building 40,500. air conditioning 15,556. Iowa State College women’s dormitory 119,988. waterworks 41,040. service building 67,296. radio station 108,?. men’s dormitory 806. Iowa State Teachers College gymnasium 57,271. women’s dormitory 180,000.
Iowa City mourns Lydia Hoag Bowerman 93 oldest living Iowa graduate and mother of former Oregon Governor Jay Bowerman. She died at her Salem home after a long illness. Bowerman was part of the University of Iowa's 1867 class.
A Washington Chamber of Commerce committee launches a special surprise day Friday to attract shoppers. Stores advertise surprise values and promise bargains found on counters and shelves, with planners predicting large crowds and further surprises later in 1939.
A noon fire swept through Kalona destroying the Eclipse Lumber Yard and its contents. Fire crews from Iowa City Wellman and Washington aided local units as embers and burning debris threatened nearby shops and homes. School was dismissed and residents evacuated belongings as the wing carried sparks toward the business district. Charles Drollinger and Harry Horesowsky manage the Eclipse Lumber Co.
A mail truck driven by George Yeaman of Washington on the Washington to Sigourney route collided with a truck driven by Leonard Dalton of New Sharon at the West Chester intersection on primary road No 2. Neither driver was hurt and both machines were damaged.
The four month strike at the Swift packing plant in Sioux City Iowa ended with a settlement announced by plant manager E F Kaderabek. The agreement restores 158 workers to their jobs though 65 former employees will not return and may pursue cases with the national labor relations board. The strike began September 29 1938 after the company refused to recognize a union grievance committee and national guards were stationed to maintain order.
Mrs. Margaret Brumfield sued Lyi and Theresa Smith for injuries from a July 1957 Cotter highway collision. The district court awarded the plaintiff 2293.50 after about four hours deliberation by the jury, which had begun discussions earlier that morning. Judge P. J. Seigers presided while attorneys Dunham Morrison and Cc. Wilson argued the case.
Des Moines report notes a House bill authorizing city councils to publish ordinances in book or pamphlet form, in addition to official newspapers. The measure requires at least 25 copies to be printed and filed with the city or town clerk.
A powerful earthquake struck southern Chile damaging Concepcion and surrounding towns. Government airlifted food, medical supplies, and crews while communications collapsed. Estimates of dead ranged from initial reports of 10 to much higher figures, with up to 40 percent of Concepcion’s buildings destroyed and six provinces affected.
Senator A Claire Dewey of Washington proposes a complete revision of Iowa sales tax to collect about 3.5 million dollars annually. The plan targets purchases in the five to fourteen cent range not taxed today and uses books of coupons redeemable against future sales tax payments.
Iowa farmers are expected to sell about 19 percent more livestock and products in 1929 than in 1938, with demand strong enough to support higher production at slight price declines. Hog numbers rise in the Corn Belt while beef eggs poultry and butter also increase. Cattle on feed up 15 percent in 1937-38 with a further 7 percent rise anticipated. Milk production remains high per cow and total output exceeds last year. Chicken meat eggs and marketing volumes are growing as chicks and hens increase. Machine tool orders rise signaling larger future production and a brighter overall business outlook for 1929.
Turkey raisers from the surrounding territory gathered at the YMCA for an all day meeting sponsored by Allied Mills of Chicago makers of poultry feed whose local agents are Ozcetten Brothers About 125 attended the forenoon and afternoon sessions and the noon dinner An evening meeting was planned for feed dealers from across southeastern Iowa
Washington charges Germany with well known discrimination against American citizens and property. The note asks Austria debt settlement be aided by most favored nation treatment for American creditors and cites Gernmany’s alleged rights and property discrimination. Berlin meanwhile proposes to negotiate debt and scale interest.
Requests for tickets for the Institute of International Understanding lecture series have been large with over a thousand issued and more arriving daily. C Douglas Booth of London England will speak on World Trade the Gateway to Peace at the high school auditorium Friday at 8 15 p m admission is by ticket only tickets available at the Y M C A the Journal office or through sponsoring groups
An informal reception is planned this afternoon in honor of James A. Betts Richmond Val attorney International president of Y's Men's clubs who will address a large Y's Men's meeting tonight. The reception in North Side cafe private dining room includes Chamber of Commerce Rotary press and local Y's Men plus invited guests. Betts will be honored at a Congress banquet tonight as delegations from nearby clubs expect to attend with Harry Sizer presiding.
The dispute centers on $26,600,000 of Austrian government bonds in U S possession, plus an undetermined total of 1930s Austrian international bonds and unknown amounts of Austrian sub division and corporate dollar bonds held by American citizens or residents.
News from the Spanish Civil War frontier reports loyalist forces under Lt. Col Jose Serrano Rovero defending Barcelona while rebels mass for a possible entry. A fleet of 32 bombers loomed overhead, spies hinted a main loyalist move, and ships near the coast opened fire on insurgent planes to protect nationals.
Health authorities plan a smallpox vaccination drive at the YMCA tomorrow from 9:90 to 3:00 as 65 percent of Washington schoolchildren are already vaccinated. They warn that a single case could lead to compulsory vaccination of susceptible students and disrupt classes. States have eliminated the threat by vaccinating all schoolchildren, a goal echoed to parents concerned for their children. Mrs. St W Howell of Crafordeville was a caller yesterday.
