A column reports parts of an 8 to 10 year old child found on an island in the Mississippi near Muscatine sparking a search for the rest of the body. In the same area the ice bound body of 35 year old Martin Patrick Sheahan of Davenport was found by brush cutters.
Gordon Farmdell of Overland Ohio will head the conservatory of music at Western Union college Le Mars this spring. He succeeds Prof. J. Frank Jewett who will study at Eastman School of Music Rochester New York during a leave of absence.
Dennis P. Hogan, former president of the Federal Land Bank of Omaha, Neb., was re elected president of the Masafera Farmers Savings Bank at its recent annual meeting. Hogan organized the bank in 1897 and has led it since. The bank’s fortieth anniversary will be celebrated next month upon Mr. and Mrs. Hogan’s return from a California vacation.
Davenport resident R. J. Fox attempted to thaw his car by building a fire beneath it. Firemen arrived and used chemicals to extinguish the blaze after the heat ruptured a sediment bulb and spilled gasoline onto the flames, causing minor damage.
IOWA CITY Dr. Arthur Steindler of the University of Iowa receives honorary membership from the National Congress of Industrial Medicine and corresponding membership from the National Academy of Sciences and Arte. He now belongs to about a half dozen national and international bodies, several in Europe.
Des Moines hosts a national farm institute February 19 and 20 with primary focus on tenancy issues. The event is announced by Mark C. Thornburg agricultural secretary of the Des Moines chamber of commerce.
Des Moines reports Rep Gustave Alesech a German-born farmer from Marcus who, at 59, says he is the most uneducated member of the Iowa legislature due to never attending school. He notes his life experience has educated him on farming issues and he is now head of the appropriations committee.
Farmers across the region are urged to attend a full day event at the McCormick Deering store featuring free movie demonstrations power farming equipment factory representatives to answer questions and educational talks. The show, announced by manager Harry Roy, highlights the new 1937 models and follows last year’s large turnout.
County Attorney Richard A Stewart said he will likely file the information against Will Jordan on Tuesday morning in district court for the murder of Mabel Sayre and Daniel Goode. Jordan is to be arraigned soon after filing, with witnesses interviewed and evidence gathered. Meantime Dale Denison, wounded in the same incident, shows improvement, though still in danger. Sayre services are planned for Sunday with a large turnout.
Sixteen people were killed when a large bus veered off the Tamiami Trail west of Miami into a canal. Fifteen others, including the driver, were rescued but many were severely injured. One identified victim was M. R. Evans of Red Oak Iowa as officials work to confirm all names.
Busby Manufacturing completes move to a new facility across from Eclipse Lumber in the Curran Building. The company purchased the buildings and now operates on North Fourth Avenue, one door north of the Washington Cheese company building.
President Roosevelt directs war time relief for flood victims in the Ohio and Mississippi valleys with Harry Hopkins coordinating from the White House. An estimated 750,000 homeless refugees, rising river levels, and widespread evacuations strain Cincinnati Louisville Portsmouth Evansville Cairo and Pittsburgh as Cairo reinforces levees with sandbagging.
Funeral services for Mrs Nancy J Chadwick will be held at 11 AM Tuesday at L A Jones funeral home with Rev Arthur Atack in charge. Burial is in Elm Grove cemetery. Born April 17 1860 in Henry county Iowa she lived in Washington since 1915. Surviving are two daughters three sons and 22 grandchildren plus six siblings.
County auditor Miss Ethel Grecian and deputies finished the tax list abstract and turned the books to Treasurer Marion B. George who will collect $727,635 this year. Receipts will be ready by mid February, with about 17,000 to be printed, many already written. Benefit checks totaling $204,271.02 are being distributed to Washington County farmers under the federal soil conservation program, a large county total for last year. Townships organize under the 1937 program with upcoming meetings to form county committee leadership. A new ruling affects landowners using unadapted red clover or alfalfa seed, disqualifying payments for the affected acreage.
Robert Hanna traveled from Mt. Pleasant Saturday night and was joined by Mrs. Hanna and their son Tommy on Sunday as they returned home after being summoned by the death of Mrs. Hanna's grandfather P. W. Tracy.
A.R. Ralston announced that Washington schools will close at 2 30 Tuesday by order of the board of education to pay respect to Mrs. Miller. Secretary O E Schmitt said the Chamber of Commerce asks all businesses to close from three to four o'clock that same day as a mark of respect.
Miller death prompts Iowa senate resolution praising her service and memory. Lt Gov and three senators appointed to attend funeral in Washington with house efforts to form a funeral committee. Governor Kraschel plans to attend. no immediate replacement for secretary of state named.
The county Red Cross allotment is $86 but locals have already subscribed $143.83. An American Pearl Button factory employee raised $84.15, United Presbyterian church members gave $27.18, Methodist church $32.50, and $50 was promised from Kalona. Donations are accepted at Washington banks.
Miss Treva Ferguson is reported ill with flu at the home of her parents Mr and Mrs Wade Ferguson in Bear Wellman. The family is said to be managing her illness and awaiting improvement.
Funeral services for Mrs. Eunice Viola Miller, longtime Washington resident and former Iowa Secretary of State, will be held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock in the Methodist church. Interment follows at Elm Grove cemetery. Mrs. Miller, born 1871 near the city, rose from local schooling to public service, notably as Supreme President of the PEO and as Iowa Secretary of State. She died Sunday morning at Des Moines Iowa Methodist Hospital after a battle with illness.
