In Burlington on January 25 eight men discuss the Frank Gillett cattle plot, tying Sol Davis to a lengthy bank robbery and a complex cattle mortgage chain. The tale traces 100 head mortgaged in 1898 to Elmore Cooper, sold through Kansas City, with seventy head passing to M A Jamison and O B Jamison before securing a $2,000 lien at Wapello State Savings Bank.
Congressman elect Joe R. Lane of Davenport urges an extra session of Congress focused solely on currency reform. He advocates making the gold standard law and retiring greenbacks to satisfy business interests nationwide.

Albert L. Lyman Hall, serving a life term for the 1896 murder of Constable DeLong, slashed his throat ear to ear and ripped the arteries in his left forearm in a desperate suicide attempt at Joliet State Prison. He is expected to recover but is deemed hopelessly deranged and likely to be moved to the Chester insane convicts hospital after assaulting his cellmate with a hammer.
James Lonergan alias James Lee, accused of killing Fond du Lac Officer Prinslow on November 18, was bound over to the circuit court. Railroad brakeman Barrell testified Lee was found face down on a box car after the murder, supporting alibi claims.

Des Moines Jan 24 The supreme court discussed a new Iowa building and loan law that exempts associations from usury limits and retroactive protections for preexisting contracts. It clarified profit sharing in such institutions and ruled retroactive changes do not alter existing shareholder agreements.
The article reports that American troops hold a small area of about 143 square miles in the archipelago while large forces sail in and more troops are to be sent. Aguinaldo questions warlike preparations and asks why the United States mass troops in the Philippines, noting an armistice with Spain and the existence of a stable Philippine government. A Tipton Indiana engineer John Dickson was killed at Hoopeston Illinois and buried in Tipton where his widow resided. She received the value of his life policy and a rival wife from Indianapolis appeared claiming to be the dead man’s wife Dickerson. She said he changed his name due to a similar employee. Mrs Dickerson filed a damages notice against the company. Des Moines officials visit Knoxville to probe alleged abuses at the state industrial home for the blind with liquor fueled assaults and financial irregularities. The broom and hammock fund for the home is nearly exhausted.
George Ernest Leverford Foyle, said to have seven wives and many sweethearts, was captured in Davenport and brought to Des Moines for trial on bigamy after a wife from Coupes Bluffs learned of his other relationship. Last October one wife had him arrested but he fled. A Tuesday Knight club dance at Phoenix Hall drew thirty four attendees with Donovan's orchestra. The None Such Quartet spent an evening with Fort Sherman.
