The Washington County Conference Board will meet Tuesday night to consider a proposed 104,900 budget for the county assessor's office for 1977 78 and to fill a vacancy on the board of assessment review. The meeting is at 7 30 p m in the county Board of Supervisors office in the courthouse lower level.
Tickets remain for a Saturday concert by the 55 voice Iowa State Singers at Washington Community Center on January 29. The show starts at 8 p.m. with doors at 7 15 p.m. Tickets cost 1.50 and are sold by ISU alumni locally and at the County Extension and Engineer offices. Part of proceeds benefit the singers and the Community Center.
Centerville Iowa United Press International reports Iowa Southern Utilities Co declared quarterly common stock dividends of 52 cents per share. The payout will be March 1 to shareholders of record February 11, an 8 cent increase from the previous year.
A Sunday night fire in Hedrick Keokuk County Iowa destroyed an antique shop owned by Norman Crow and damaged a nearby cafe and store. Firemen from six southeast Iowa departments battled the flames as investigators probed the cause with losses estimated at 90,000 to 100,000 dollars.
John Adams, 31, of Richland, honored as Iowa Outstanding Young Farmer for managing a 408 acre farm with 2,800 hogs and 148 beef cattle. First runner up was Robert Condon of Clare, second runner up Gerald Yoder of Kalona. Jim Markham of Holy Cross named Most Promising Young Farmer. Pat McGoldrick of Des Moines and Council Bluffs Mayor Dennis Anderson named as Outstanding Young Iowans.
United Press International reports the death of 8 year old Trixie French of Fairbank after a snowmobile collision with a car on Iowa 56 near Fairbank. Her 10 year old brother Terry, driver of the snowmobile, is in fair condition in Elkader. no charges filed.
The annual AFS Follies in the Washington High School auditorium features mime acts skits by faculty, music and various performances. Proceeds support the American Field Service chapter sponsoring foreign student exchanges. No admission charge with a free will offering, program begins at 8 p.m. Refreshments served later by exchange students.
The Evening Journal reports January 30 designated Patsy Wilson Day in Washington by proclamation of Mayor Harold L. Johnson. Helen Patsy Wilson, longtime English teacher from 1920 to 1951, library board chair, and key figure in Historic Conger House, is honored for community service and her influence on thousands of students. A community open house at Historic Conger House is planned from 2 to 5 p.m. with hostesses from her family and local boards.
Vice President Mondale said any increase in U S NATO aid beyond a modest rise would depend on European partners' increases. He pledged not to cut NATO commitment while trimming wasteful defense spending and urged a cooperative approach with alliance members. He noted talks covered world economy and would likely host a mid year economic summit if leaders react positively.
Senior army general Emilio Villaescusa Quilis, 64, head of the armed forces judiciary, was kidnapped by four gunmen as he left his Madrid home. Police set roadblocks and heightened airport and rail vigilance after the abduction near Retiro Park. The incident follows a prior capture of Antonio Maria de Oriol y Urquijo.
A swine clinic sponsored by the Extension Service will be held Wednesday January 26 in the Washington YMCA Community Room. The session runs 9 45 a m to about 3 p m with Palmer Holden Iowa State Extension Swine Specialist presenting on age related pig nutritional needs and a workshop using feed tags and a hand calculator. Eldon Olsen reviews current feed outlook and Eldon Hans discusses 1977 profit prospects and influencing factors. A producer panel on remodeled swine facilities and a discussion on mange lice and other external parasites complete the program open to pork producers.

Washington County Board of Supervisors approved about 6 percent annual raises for 24 road department workers and two treasurer's clerks moved from probation to full pay. County Engineer Bob Huber gains 1200 dollars to a 25700 salary. The board also re appointed deputy sheriffs, funded a planning grant, and approved bids for two dump trucks.
