Washington moves to more rigid limits on oleomargarine and imitations raising taxes on colored substitutes. A 12 to 5 committee vote ordered a report on the stricter measure with amendments.
In Washington on January 24 the senate discussed a bill to create a new executive department. Senator Hanna urged expanding commerce while Senator Hale argued the United States already captured all foreign trade worth having. They clashed over the Dingley law and global markets as Hanna claimed Europe remains largely unconquered.
The speaker asserted that commercial, industrial and agricultural bodies demand a bill of the kind. he said the term industrial interests includes capital and labor, organized and unorganized. He claimed organized labor supports placing the department of labor in the new department. Bacon noted Samuel Trumpers protested the transfer and urged heed.

Washington January 24 Teller introduced a resolution asking the United States to interfere on behalf of Scheepers the Boer leader condemned for barbarous conduct in the South African war learning Scheepers had been shot last Saturday Teller asked that his resolution be indefinitely postponed He denounced England in the Boer war and said if facts stood as he understood them Great Britain in putting Scheepers to death is guilty of a vile assassination.

Rev. J A Hagaman, pastor of the Church of God in southern Indiana, was dismissed by church trustees after two months of conflict. About fifty members withdrew and formed a new denomination. Hagaman vows to fight for the church building in court.
Sycamore will retain the county courthouse after the county board voted 13 to 9 to keep the seat there. DeKalb citizens offered to raise 100000, but Sycamore’s 70000 and a site won approval, ending twenty years of effort to move the courthouse. The board then authorized bids for construction.
The Minnots Central railroad, after gaining a controlling interest in the Missouri river bridge and related property, will immediately start replacing the bridge by adding a second draw span of 520 feet due to changes in river current.

Mrs Ida Billey aged 25 was shot three times and killed by her husband Charles Billey in a family dispute. An angry crowd pursued Billey but police arrived first, preventing violence.
In Keytesville Missouri Wiley Ellis aged 50 was shot and killed and James Nichols aged 20 was shot four times and seriously wounded in a quarrel that stemmed from Ellis opposing Nichols sister’s reconciliation. Ex Representative Holmes dies insane in Sioux City Iowa after serving in the Tenth Congress.
Indianapolis January meeting of miners' delegates exonerates President Mitchell and Secretary-Treasurer Wilson. They condemn Miss Meredith's charges as groundless and endorse officers' honesty. Delegates vote down foreign language and socialist motions, consider credentials, and approve endorsing a strike by Custom Clothing Makers' union.
