Apollo 5 Moon Bug Flight Proves Space Suitcase Ready
Apollo 5 Lunar Module completes a 7 hour 40 minute space flight piloted by a robot computer in earth orbit. Ground controllers use an alternate plan to salvage the mission after an engine failure and officials say the craft performed with surprising precision on return. The test boosts hope Lunar Module can carry astronauts in late 1960s. Dr. George Mueller calls it an excellent flight and a key step toward the moon. If manned, the mission could lead to the next crewed launch later this year with another LM aboard for a second unmanned trial if needed.
