Mrs. Jack Handelsman reveals her husband finally noticed after 17 years that she has given him the same greeting card every birthday. On Monday she will present it for the 80th time as he turns 54.
Washington county public health unit under Miss Ethel Gregg offers wide services including communicable disease control, maternity care, preschool exams, child health conferences, mobile N-ray plans, and the crippled children clinic. Dr. C A Boice notes emphasis on teaching practical health maintenance across homes, schools, and clubs.
Berlin dispatch reports Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov arrived for the Big Four conference and urged immediate Chinese participation. Western ministers prepared a united front to counter Soviet moves as the talks set to open Monday in Berlin with discussions on German peace and Russian independence.
Cpl Edward Dickinson the 23 year old Korean War prisoner who renounced the Reds and asked to be returned to the United States faces possible Army court martial for allegedly dealing directly and indirectly with the enemy and seeking favorable treatment to the detriment of fellow prisoners. He is held at Walter Reed Hospital and could face the death penalty on one charge. Also noting Cpl Claude Batchelor of Texas who followed Dickinson’s lead and was reunited with his Japanese wife in Tokyo this month.
Senator McCarthy plans to meet with three Democratic members who quit his Senate Permanent Investigating Subcommittee last year to discuss differences. He may concede on staff oversight but a Democratic aide says more is needed. the deserters were Sen. McClellan, Sen. Symington, and Sen. Jackson, who left after McCarthy gained staff hiring authority following J. I. Matthews’ resignation.
In Panmunjom the UN Command refused a Communist call to return 21 000 liberated prisoners to Indian custody. Gen Lee Sang Cho decried the move as a breach of the armistice. Gen Lacey explained the release created civilian status under the truce and declined to concede further. The dispute over prisoner disposition may continue and threaten talks.
Mrs. A. J. Nichols of Wellman fell in her home Friday and broke her leg. She was taken to Mercy hospital in Iowa City.
A French armored column advances along the east coast of Indochina linking with sea-borne units to press inland from Tug Hoa after landing 4,000 troops in a beach assault. The action aims to project strength before truce talks as Navarre executes the second phase of the offensive.

Defense Secretary Charles E Wilson pledged to Congress he will resist budget cuts, stating the planned 37.575 billion dollar outlay is the minimum to defend against communism. He warned there will be no land battles in the continental United States in a WW II scenario and that the Army will scale manpower by 17 percent yet retain a 1.2 million force next year.
Roy Polson of Wellman died this morning at Mercy hospital in Iowa City after about two weeks as a patient.

Authorities probe fifth blaze in Newton Iowa business district fire wave begun Sunday. The latest Friday night flames reportedly began in a trash barrel and reached the Mavtag Hotel rear entrance. Bellhop Wilbert Young, 22, was hospitalized in fair condition. Earlier, State Fire Marshal Zack Cook investigated a Friday morning fire at the J Penny Store causing about 2000 dollars in damages. The initial Sunday blaze razed a quarter block in the same district, part of a 200000 dollar series.
