Mayor David F. Loepp announced options have been secured on nearly all 900 acres needed for a projected army bomber base. The city will pay the landowners' asking prices after a real estate board committee report. An army inspection board is due within 10 days to designate land for purchase.
In Pottawattamie county 55 year old William Basche of Hancock died when his car collided with a snowplow two miles east of Hancock. His wife was seriously injured and taken to a Council Bluffs hospital. Also hurt were their son and daughter in law Marion Basche. The car reportedly tried to pass the stopped snow plow for repairs and drifted back to the road edge to avoid an oncoming vehicle.
Dr John Barton of the University of Wisconsin told the Farmers Grain Dealers association of Iowa at its annual meeting in Des Moines that farm people must adopt cooperative methods. He warned that relying on personal initiative alone would worsen difficulties and stressed the need for cooperative effort.
Virgil Breed head of the Des Moines Retail Grocers association says fresh sugar allotments will be issued Feb 1 and grocers will continue restricting the amounts individual buyers may purchase. He warns hoarding by some worsens conditions for neighbors cooperating to avoid shortages.

Russian forces report a 2 to 25 mile advance west of Mozhaisk after clashing with German troops near Borodino, Napoleon’s 1812 battlefield. James Schimpeller, employed at Scott Furniture, received an electric shock yesterday afternoon while on a balcony near the repair room. He gripped a beam with a wrapped cord, fell from a ladder to the concrete floor, and landed on his left shoulder. He was unconscious briefly.
