Lockridge resident Gus Peterson 74 learned he was not a U S citizen and acted to fix it. He was naturalized in federal court under Judge Charles A. Dewey after arriving from Sweden at age eight and voting since age 21, believing paternal naturalization made him a citizen.
Harold Page and family frantic search for Annabelle a four month old kitten. The cat vanished in morning and was found in a hot air furnace pipe. Harold crawled through the pipe aided by his mother aunt and a neighbor to free the animal from the shaft. Annabelle suffered singed whiskers and a burned paw from the furnace journey.
A semi conscious man was left near the highway two miles west of Emmetsburg after being knocked down by a motorist. Emmetsburg veterinarian Dr. W. H. Ashey found the victim, with a broken leg and frostbitten feet, and he was taken to a hospital. An automobile engine was found near the crumbled form.
Des Moines attorney Hill, head of the Works Progress Administration in Iowa, rejected a proposal to pay workers on the Des Moines WPA at the prevailing union wage while shortening hours. He argued 6,123 WPA job seekers still awaited assignments and that changing schedules would cripple the program.
On the John Thompson farm three miles northeast of here a cow kicked a lantern starting a small blaze in the barn. Thompson lit a lantern to investigate and the barn burned with chickens harness and ten tons of hay destroyed.
Des Moines audience met explorer William La Warre as he arrived for a lecture without missing a beat. He showcased clothing he carried for the talk, including a snug woolen underwear set and a heavy fur lined overcoat, wearing both during the presentation.
Iowa City reports a diverse campus with 22 countries represented among University of Iowa students. The foreign contingent includes men and women from five continents except Africa, listing India Ireland Taiwan England Korea China Canada Philippines Italy Paraguay Austria Norway Turkey Peru Hawaii Germany Siam Czechoslovakia Alaska Japan Mexico and Persia.

Dense crowds greeted the monarch as King George V’s body was borne from Sandringham to Westminster Hall. Traffic was cleared for the procession and the king lay in state for four days.
A romance that started with a public wedding and a riot ended today as Mrs. Frank Boynson filed for divorce. She seeks the return of her maiden name Marie Von Essen and alleges she was held up to ridicule during the scandal.
Washington January 23. Republican members of the Senate Agriculture Committee reject a sub committee role on a substitute for the invalid AAA. Senator Bankhead chairs the committee with Pope Murphy Hatch and Smith as members to confer with Secretary Wallace and AAA administrator Davis. The new 500 million dollar two year farm relief program grants broad powers to the secretary to make soil conservation payments.
An afternoon collision on primary road 161 near Haskins involved a Lee county ambulance carrying three patients to University Hospital Iowa City and a car driven by Leo Allbaugh of Washington with Joe Veateh of Cedar Rapids. All occupants escaped serious harm though exposed to cold. An additional ambulance was arranged to move the three Lee county patients to the hospital.
Fifteen members of the ecounty planning committee for Washington County were named by County Agent W J Roudabush to study farm history and crops and advise on improving farming. The group will plan a permanent program and meet Feb 6 in Washington with a Henry county group to coordinate state specialist services. Joe Knotek Amos Stout and Carl Anderson attended a prior meeting for such groups.
About 30 salesmen and tank men from Standard Oil gathered yesterday at the YMCA in the region for a conference held in the afternoon and evening.
A report notes the charge of R B McClellan as assistant superintendent of the Davenport district.
James E. Van Zandt national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will visit Washington Iowa February 6 as guest of the Washington county post. A noon luncheon is planned and service men and friends are invited. He will also stop in Cherokee Webster City and Des Moines during a two day Iowa tour visiting five towns.
Barn Goodwin aged 81 collapsed and died this afternoon while shoveling snow in front of his home at 738 South Second Avenue. Funeral services likely Saturday afternoon. body taken to Jones funeral home.
A proposal to convert 1,600 CCC camps into air force training sectors was discussed by the House Military Affairs Committee. Sponsored by the Commercial Department of the Bureau of Aeronautics, the plan seeks to repurpose existing camps for severe aviation training.
A Tobin farm residence half a mile east of Haskins burned yesterday evening between six and seven o'clock. The Tobin home, recently sold to A C Jones of Ainsworth with possession due March, was destroyed after a chimney caused the blaze. Most Tobin goods were lost though some items stored for a tenant by Mr Jones were saved. Insurance partially covers the loss.
About forty men and women gathered at the Congress hotel for a noon conference of district taxpayers. Mayor Lloyd Lytle welcomed visitors as Senator A. Claire Dewey introduced Joe B. Long who spoke on forming independent county organizations to engage tax issues.
Despite severe weather, Methodist church services continue this week with strong attendance. Last evening's gathering, sponsored by the young people, featured Dr. Schwartz speaking on Comrades of Emmaus Road. Tonight offers Family Night with a sermon on Calvary's Three Crosses.
President Roosevelt and Secretary Morgenthau study a new financial law to be announced soon. The plan would create a national credit scheme to fund the soldiers' bonus, the AAA Substitute, and silver purchases, insiders say.

The local weather observer recorded a new low of 22 degrees below zero last night, beating yesterday’s 21 below. Residents stayed indoors and wore ear protectors while awaiting a possible zero or higher reading tonight as temperatures moderate.
Helen Bush a 20 year old teacher was overcome by cold while trudging through drifts to reach her country school and was rescued by Theodore Linder. She is at the Linder home with hands and feet frozen. A dog found dead near Manchester was frozen solid in place.
At 12 30 today the temperature was ten below and rising slowly. Grade schools were closed with EB A Ralston saying they may remain closed if warmer weather does not arrive. The high school and junior college stay open. WPA quarry work halted for two days due to the cold. Farmers report heavy livestock losses from the sudden freeze. Numerous country schools also affected.
Eddie Squire custodian at the Y building said he was tired after staying with the furnace fires all night to ensure continuous heat. He kept up the effort amid cleanup after the Y circus and walked to and from his home due to his frosted car, yet he remains stoic under the strain.
Farm families on relief two years ago have repaid the government nine million dollars of sixty eight billion advanced to rehabilitate farms. A rural resettlement report details aid, noting Iowa has three thousand seven hundred nine families still in resettlement programs.
Dr Boozer will substitute for the injured pastor Dr F W Eastwood at the Presbyterian church next Sunday. Eastwood was hurt in an automobile accident a week ago.
Washington's official weather observer reported a new record this morning for total calls about the temperature. He noted 110 calls yesterday and could not recall more than 96 calls in previous years.
