Attorney L J Kehoe for the city says a settlement with Washington's city officials and the volunteer firemen is hoped to be reached by compromise though no instant agreement is expected due to sickness and upcoming meetings. He plans talks with both sides and aims for a compromise satisfying all parties despite ongoing work.
Wallace James Loder of Cedar Rapids requests 720.10 in damages from Charles Curtis for an auto collision south of Crawfordsville on July 13. Loder alleges his car struck a hog owned by Curtis on highway 218 and seeks reimbursement for vehicle damage and lost business use during repair.
A promise could be arranged between the disputing parties to establish a normal progressive routine.
Secretary Benson announced a major reorganization moving 20 department agencies into four divisions. The Agricultural Conservation Program leaves PMA and joins a new Production and Marketing group led by John H. Davis, heading several agencies including CCC and Commodity Credit Corp.
The Kalona Yoder Implement company suffered a nighttime break in. Sheriff’s deputies investigated after intruders gained entry by breaking a window in the front door, but nothing was stolen.
Four Washington county 4 H leaders and an extension worker will attend the third annual Leaders Day at Iowa State College January 26. Dr Coburn will headline with group discussions and a panel, followed by meals and campus tours funded by a grant from the Iowa chain store council.
Washington Federal Savings and Loan Association held its annual meeting on North Marion avenue. L. A. Jones C. V. Crull and Ralph Bauer were reelected as directors. Bauer reported assets of 1 657 602 29 and 95 loans totaling over 360 000. Total loans 1 194 961 82 with 35 000 in dividends paid in 1952. GI loans exceed 644 000. Board reelected Dunlap president Bauer secretary treasurer and Swift assistant secretary treasurer Crull named VP replacing Winga.
Chicago infant Roger Lee Brodie 16 months died after a dramatic separation from his Siamese twin last month. He had lingered in a deep coma for 34 days before his death Tuesday night. His brother Rodney Dee Brodie remained in critical condition with an excellent chance to recover and live normally.
Two 18 and 23 year old Marine airplane mechanics walked 200 miles from an air base to the Western Front seeking a fighting outfit. After two days on a shell scarred hill they learned there was no room for them. The regimental commander told them they did it the wrong way, but said they likely would not be punished too severely.
A 64 foot ship from Benedict Arnold s fleet raised from Lake Champlain near Valcour Island is believed to be the Congress. Capt Hagelund and a 10 man crew discreetly raised and towed it to the New York side to await spring preservation. Col Sydney Hammersley notes the ship s solid oak still shows fire damage and confirms the find. Hagglund previously raised the gondola Philadelphia off Valcour Island.
Chicago Judge Julius H. Miner refused to annul the marriage of Richard Crescenzo, 21, after he learned his wife misrepresented her age. Crescenzo learned she was ten years younger than he believed, yet the court deemed the union legally existing.
In Madisonville Hopkins County operators report savings of more than 27000 by using hickory wood roof bolts made in the mine shops instead of steel bolts. Wood bolts cost under 20 cents each while steel bolts run about one dollar.
Total income payments to Iowans in 1951 reached 4 019 billion dollars an all time high. Iowa ranks 18th in the nation in total income payments.
Senator Byrd said he would object to confirmation until Charles E. Wilson sells his GM stock. Byrd noted selling the 46 000 shares would make Wilson completely eligible, as White House reiterated Eisenhower’s stance on Wilson amid reports of a possible sale.
Former President Harry S. Truman told about 10 000 cheering Independence crowd that he will be unavailable until he helps his wife unpack after eight months of packing. He joked he will be hungry for dinner invitations once the task is done. The homecoming drew a tumultuous reception despite patrols and sheriff’s officers.
Peiping radio reports a United States B-29 shot down over Manchuria carried spies to be dropped by parachute. The plane allegedly went down January 12 nine miles inside Manchuria. U S Air Force says downed in North Korea. Peiping claims 11 parachuted to safety, 3 killed, survivors in detention camps.
Mrs Mildred Westermark announces Open House at the Beauty Lounge next Saturday January 24 from 1 to 9 p.m. Marcia Robertson and Eileen Hammen will be on hand to show visitors through the shop. Further details appear in another advertisement in the Evening Journal.
Dr Walter Burgmayer, 26, a German physician who tended wounded American Corporal Albert Kessler in Munich, moved to the United States with the Kessler family funding his visa. He stayed with the Kesslers in New York and Philadelphia before planning to intern in Peoria Illinois before state exams. Burgmayer, from Regensburg, served in the German army and was captured by Americans in 1945.
Don Goetz a chemical engineer at the State University of Iowa and son of Mr and Mrs George Goetz of Red 2 Washington Iowa has been named Assistant Comptroller on the business staff of the Iowa Transit a monthly publication by engineering students at the State University of Iowa in Iowa City
In Bellefonte Pennsylvania guards armed with riot guns and tear gas awaited a call to action while hard core holdouts at Rockview Prison refused to end their uprising. State troopers backed the effort and Governor Fine's tough stance was to be carried out. State Attorney General Woodside inspected the area and later conferred with prison officials to decide whether to send in the guard and free six hostages. A prisoner phone call at 3 a.m. mentioned guard William Chandler offering to replace a hostage whose wife was ill.
Iowa's per capita income reached a record high of 1 53 dollars in 1951 while the nation averages 1 584 dollars. Iowa ranks 22nd nationally in per capita income reflecting state earnings.
Des Moines Iowas Farm Bureau President Howard Hill told legislators at a bureau banquet that he opposes any state tax increase. He warned the farmers financial strain is rising as costs stay high and farm prices fall. He urged against repealing the five cent per pound oleomargarine tax and favored coloring margarine only if butter prices are not affected.
Davenport Iowa report says Geneva George denied that writing to lonely men was a fraud. Postal authorities charged her with obtaining money in fraudulent fashion through large correspondence with bachelors. Two men claimed sending $115. she said they sent it freely and she did not take more than that, with one $70 case linked to her husband’s trip.
Mrs Blanche Saforek left this morning for Davenport for a short visit with Mr and Mrs Don Saforek.
The Iowa House approved a resolution 102 to 0 urging Congress to end the two cent federal gas tax and let Iowa collect it. Moving the tax to the state would raise state revenue to about 60 million dollars annually, with portions returning to nonhighway uses. Representative Schwengel pushed the plan noting the federal share has been kept by the federal government. The measure heads to the Senate as part of 1953 legislature actions.
Mr and Mrs D K Pence top the six round standings in the Y s Men club sponsored contract bridge marathon. Runners up include Dr and Mrs J M Lloyd Mrs Willa Freshwaters and Mrs Manton Hebner followed by several other pairs such as Mr and Mrs Theodore Batley Leon Hillman and Mrs Joe Falk and more in the top ten.
In northern Japan strange colored balls appeared Dec 29 and Jan 9, moving slowly then streaking across the sky. Col. Curtis Low of the 39th Air Division says radar observers and American pilots corroborated the sightings near a Russian Far East base. The objects reportedly change from red to green to white and reached as far south as northern Honshu.
