In Shenandoah a district court jury awarded Bert Gowing a plumber seven thousand dollars damages after a fall from the Henry Field Seed Co building roof. Gowing claimed neck injuries from the incident.
More than 175 people have been vaccinated in recent days at Badger for smallpox, doctors report. Several mild cases have appeared in the community.
A horse kicked over a lantern on Mrs. Jerry Carrier’s farm near here causing a barn to burn for a $5,000 loss. The horse was saved. A rival to the Mrs. O’Leary tale, the incident echoes famous Chicago fire lore.
Capt. Hardsoeg, commander of the local National Guard cavalry troop, was notified of his assignment to the Fort Riley training school in Kansas. He is the sole Iowa officer selected for the course from the state this year.
Anta Bassler, 10, slipped on ice and rolled 200 feet down a steep bank near Dubuque while en route to school. She escaped with cuts and bruises.
Mrs. Matt Piersch. 47, Dubuque, is on the road to recovery after complications from a sharp bone piercing her esophagus. A operation removed the bone in a recent procedure.
Iowa City University of Iowa student Robert Brown 20 of Sioux City was rushed to University Hospital in fair condition after slipping on ice near Highway 161 and falling under a truck driven by Roy Lee Webster City. He suffered multiple fractured ribs.
In Des Moines the 1925 and 1936 corn husking champions were shown to the Iowa House. Rep. Thomas Rutherford Jr. of Audubon introduced Kilmer the 1935 winner and Carl the 1936 champion to Speaker LaMar Foster and the body.

Wintry northwest winds kept Iowa in a severe cold wave with all sections reporting record lows. Northwestern readings reached 24 to 25 degrees below zero. southern areas saw milder values near two degrees below zero at Davenport and Keokuk.

The Wallace home at 508 West Main Street drew a call from the fire department yesterday afternoon. Smoke emanated from a basement burner but no fire existed as the device malfunctioned and the Wallaces did not know the cause of the smoke.
The nationally known evangelist Henry Charles Marty will lead evangelistic services at the Foursquare Gospel Church from January 4 to February 7, every evening at 7 30 except Sundays. Marty, a skilled musician and speaker, has held meetings in Chicago Cleveland and Des Moines and attracts large youth crowds. The public is invited to attend all or part of the services with good music promised alongside preaching.

Assistant Glenn Devine of Des Moines is named to fill the coaching duties. Schroeder has coached six sports since 1907 and remains tennis coach.

In Monroe Iowa on January 22 Aleside Benoit pled guilty to the kidnap murder of State Trooper Richard Hammond and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Charles City reports Fred J. Ortman was saved when ice and snow on Gharies City streets caused him to be struck by a car driven by Harold Teeters and dragged 50 feet before bystanders heard his shouts and Teeters stopped to extricate him.
Daniel Goode, 11 years a resident here, died at the county hospital from bullet wounds inflicted by Will Jordan. Born October 20, 1893 in Meadows III, he came to Iowa 34 years ago and lived near Wayland. He moved to Washington about eleven years ago to a carpenter career and was a Mennonite. Surviving are his mother in Wayland, three brothers Joe, Jake of Wayland, Amos of Davenport, and three sisters Anna Heier of Rantoul, Barbara Heiser of Dewey, and Ed Wenger of Wayland. Funeral plans pending word from Illinois. Body taken to brother Joe’s home near Wayland.
Des Moines reports the house voted 58 to 36 to restrict Governor Kraschel's seed loan bill to the 45 federally designated drouth counties after a heated debate. The action narrows the program to drought areas only.

Will Jordan faces murder charges for a spree at the Diamond Inn on West Madison Street that left two dead and two more wounded. He will be moved from the county hospital to the jail after a physician’s consent, with arraignment likely later today before Justice of the Peace W. S. Eldridge. Mabel Sayre died yesterday, Daniel Goode died this morning, Dale Denison remains critically hurt, and Roy White survived with a shoulder wound. Sheriff Putnam clarified shooter sequence and confirmed Jordan’s self inflicted wound before surrender. Sayre’s funeral is set for Sunday. Goode will be buried in Wayland. coroner Dr. Kyle says no inquest.
