A jury ruled Joseph Beattie Vanalst of Topeka Kansas legally sane after jailer testimony of odd behavior. He is ordered held for trial on charges that he threatened a woman with a butcher knife and robbed her of 385 dollars and a ring.
In Washington Ezra Benson unveils a 17.4 percent cut in commercial corn acreage triggering production controls across 22 states. Iowa Secretary Clyde Spry argues the system lets farmers shift to other crops, undermining the program’s intent and repeating 1950 patterns.
A public hearing on a proposed zoning change will be held at 8 p m in Washington city hall. The proposal would move the Marsh Bailey property on East Washington street from residential to business district. City councilmen and Mayor Bill Smart invite nearby property owners and other residents to attend and speak.
Jaycees president Bill Perdock announced that the week January 14 21 is observed as Junior Chamber of Commerce Week in Washington. Local Jaycees will combine their birthday banquet with Bosses Night and award the Outstanding Young Man of the year in Washington county. The national Jaycees marked their 64th anniversary with over 2900 local chapters participating.
President Eisenhower outlined an experimental plan to aid low income families in purchasing homes with little or no down payment. He asked for funds to build 35,000 public housing units and to rehabilitate run down neighborhoods to prevent slum formation.
At a YMCA meeting the Home Association of Washington reported assets of 57 804 14 toward a planned retirement home. About 100 contributors named bequests or cash gifts supporting a 74 ½ acre site in south Washington with planning for initial building and ten cottages to follow.
Twenty eight American Marines drowned when an LST carrying anti Communist Chinese to Formosa rammed their landing craft in Inchon Harbor. Rescue boats pulled twenty three others from frigid waters as chaos swept the harbor during the Korean War.
Vincent and Campbell will represent Washington Soil Conservation district as official delegates at the annual short course to be held January 2022 on the Iowa State College campus in Ames. Governor Beardsley opens the program, with Gladwen E. Young and Dr James Hilton among speakers. Topics cover production possibilities, land conservation, district commissioners’ responsibility, and the soil conservation program for 1954.
In Saigon the French Union seized Tug Hoa port and coastal citadel with about 2,000 seaborne commandos. Gen Guy de Beaufort leads more than 8,000 troops in an opening move of an offensive to clear Viet Minh rebels from southern Indochina, to be financed in part by the American backed Vietnam National Army. The operation is expected to take several months.
A Washington group attended a recognition program at the Iowa City Veterans Hospital honoring 26 volunteers who donated over 42 000 hours. Elbert Beaver welcomed attendees and Dr Stillwell praised volunteers assisting patients with therapy, nursing, bandage wrapping and children's nursery services.
Marion McAvoy urged VEW and auxiliary members to attend the first district meeting in Ke oku k. Leland Goosey and Joseph Maher will attend with Ruth Davis. The gathering opens at 1 30 p m followed by a Dutch lunch at 6 and an evening of entertainment.
Washington Federal Savings and Loan Association held its annual meeting at 2 p m on Wednesday. Ralph V Bauer reported December 31 1953 figures: deposits totaling 1 709736 07 from 632 savers, total assets 1 849 937 54, reserves up 11342 82, and home loans for the year 231 751 71 including 43000 for new construction. Directors L E Dunlap Frank M Longwell and John Winga were reelected to new terms. other directors include George J Breit enbach C V Crull L A Jones Ralph V Bauer Carlton C Wilson and Dr Preston L Etter. Officers re elected: L E Dunlap president C V Crull vice president and Ralph V Bauer secretary treasurer.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles said the Berlin Big Four conference will test whether Europe stays united for peace or faces division and war. He warned of Soviet demands to invite Red China and expressed confidence that the United States would stay open to cooperation if Soviet leaders seek peaceful conditions.
Acting Postmaster Bert Ramos aged 41 won a special election 298 to 251 in Luverne Iowa to secure permanent appointment. Ramos defeated Leo Garman a 32 year old farmer and disabled veteran after Kosuth County Republicans failed to name a candidate for Postmaster General Summer field.
President Eisenhower sends Congress the first all Republican budget in 22 years. It calls for a five billion dollar overall cut for fiscal 1955 and a four billion dollar defense reduction to favor air and atomic power over ground forces. Military spending set near 37.5 billion with Army and Navy bearing the brunt.
Beth Applegate an 11 year old girl in Burlington has been unconscious since a brain operation last November. Doctors said a tumor caused the illness but no tumor was found during the operation and the parents refuse to accept the prognosis. The family will continued prayer for her recovery.
The Washington Knights of Columbus council schedules a Sunday initiation on January 24. Candidates and knights attend an 8:30 a.m. communion mass, breakfast in St. James social hall, initiation at 1 p.m., dinner and a short program at 6:30 p.m. A large turnout from southeast Iowa is anticipated.
The Federal Communications Commission issued a permit for a new television station in Sioux City Iowa. KCOM Broadcasting Co was awarded a channel 4 permit for the city.
Davenport based WOC-TV plans color broadcasting starting about July 1 per Ernest C. Sanders station general manager. The move marks a major upgrade for the local station and its viewers.
Washington county chapter of the American Red Cross offers an 18 hour standard first aid course with a three year certificate. Enrollment requires being 15 or having completed ninth grade. the 7 p.m. meeting Monday at the YMCA, and the only cost is the textbook.
Lloyd Robertson deputy sheriff of Washington county announces he will seek the Republican nomination for clerk of court in the upcoming primary. He moved to Washington in 1948 and has since worked as a bookkeeper and deputy sheriff. He is a U S Army veteran, member of Masonic lodge IOOF and Washington Methodist church, married with three children.
Fair and quite cold tonight in Iowa with frigid lows of 8 to 15 below zero. Friday brings increasing cloudiness and slightly milder highs 5 to 15 above in the northeast and 15 to 20 in the southwest. Some snow Friday night followed by a milder Saturday and colder spell late Saturday.
