Zero temperatures returned as a northwest wind intensified cold across Washington. In Iowa, a blizzard like snowstorm dropped temps to zero and below with poor visibility, and a three car crash near Leon claimed the life of 47 year old Mrs. Bessie Drake of Excelsior Minnesota.
A sharp cold snap plunged the central United States below freezing with rain turning to ice in Chicago for five hours. Flooding spread across seven southern states while Rome Georgia evacuated families as rivers rose. Heat contrasted in Miami and Texas while the northern plains plunged to 20 below zero.
Washington post office invites proposals to carry Star Route mail from July 1947 to June 1951. Three Iowa routes including Washington to Sigourney, Iowa City, and Muscatine, with trips six days weekly and listed times. Current annual pay for the Washington to Sigourney route is 2560.75 dollars.
Ft her McArtor of Crawfordsville is named to the advisory committee of the Farmers Home Administration succeeding W. Leslie Gates who moved to Oregon. Also joining Otto Lehmit er of Rubio and James Combs of Washington the panel will review farm family eligibility and loan safety aligned with Farm Housing programs and tenant law.
Nighttime temperatures plummeted with Duluth Minnesota near average 16 below yesterday. Grand Forks North Dakota measured 16 below while Minneapolis St Paul hit eight below and Milwaukee Madison Wisconsin five below. Rockford Illinois registered two below in the northeast corner of the state.
Rock Island Illinois January 21 a young mother Mrs Shirley Berry 21 and her two small children Edward 2 and six month old Scarlet Dawn perished when a trailer camp home burned. Fire blamed on overheated stove neighbors said the father Robert Berry was being discharged from the army at Fort Sheridan today. He had never seen his youngest child.
Knights of Pythias lodge 147 installed officers at the Washington lodge last night in the newly moved and redecorated Morrison building rooms on the square. Wayne Kendrick as chancellor commander led installation with district deputy Bogg Mae of Ottumwa presiding. An oyster supper preceded the ceremony and about 100 members attended a next meeting will review rank of esquire. The group recently relocated from the east side to occupy space once used by the lodge. A circulation heater was approved for purchase and to be installed soon.
A fire near DeWitt Iowa destroyed the Walter McGarry farm home causing about 20090 damage. Mr and Mrs McGarry and their five children escaped in their night clothes after being awakened by smoke from a short circuit.

Georgia Governor Herman Talmadge proposed a plan to resign after a white primary law’s passage if Lt. Gov. M E Thompson also steps down to allow a special election. He pledged to resign only after the bill to exclude black voters clears the House and urged a state wide vote to choose the next governor. He spoke as about 2000 students marched on the capitol to demand broad public input.
T. H. Huston of Crawfordsville in Washington county was chosen as chairman of the committee on insurance for the present session of the general assembly. Speaker Gus Kuester announced committee chairmen today. The house maintains 54 standing committees, one fewer than two years ago, with national defense the eliminated panel.
Lester D Long drove a truck and Richard E Hisel drove a car in a collision west of Brighton yesterday afternoon. No injuries were reported. Car damage was about 300 dollars and truck damage was about 10 dollars.

He argued communism was born from intellectuals led by Lenin and urged excluding those with communist ties from government while defending individual rights in America.

John C. Kloepfer 57 of Riverside died yesterday in his Diamond DXN truck on Highway 22 three miles east of Riverside. Funeral services set for Thursday at St Marys Church with burial at St Vincent's Cemetery. He leaves Stella Schnoebelen, a son Bernard, daughter Gretchen Spratt and several relatives.
State Fire Marshall John Strohm said arson charges will be filed in Maquoketa against William Spettel of Waterloo for two December farm fires near Andrew Iowa. An assistant, Charles Cornell, obtained Spettel’s admission that he started blazes at the Elmer Hoover and Henry Gettler farms in Jackson County on December 22.
Grundy Center residents will vote January 21 in a special election to authorize a 200000 bond to finance the construction of a memorial hospital in Grundy Center. The date was set by the county Board of Supervisors at their meeting yesterday.
A nine men three women jury was impaneled in district court to hear S. W. Korf and Charles Cannon against Rock Island railroad trustees. Korf seeks 15400 for land taken for the Ainsworth Brighton cut off, with 140 acres affected southwest of Ainsworth. Gen George C Marshall was sworn in as Secretary of State in Washington filling the post after speculation he might be drafted for president. He declared he cannot be drafted and would govern the department as a non political job. He becomes first in the presidential line of succession with no vice president. The ceremony included President Truman and other officials.
Thirty three thousand Greek civil employees walked out in Athens demanding pay increases of up to two hundred percent. The mass action disrupted government offices and prompted a government response as workers pressed for faster wage settlements.
