Robert W. Perrin, 34, was charged with first degree murder in the slaying of his mother Mrs. C A Perrin 60 last Friday. He was taken to Cherokee state hospital Wednesday for observation. Perrin also shot and slightly wounded his father C A Perrin 62 and himself after the incident.
A federal court hearing began Wednesday before Judge Charles A. Dewey on a petition by guards at the Iowa Ordnance Plant in Burlington to recover overtime pay. The suit, filed in the names of F. A. Timberlocke Louis Jagels and Frank Cannop, names Day and Zimmerman Inc contractors at the Burlington plant as defendants.
Nashua operator Larry Crooks aged 54 was killed when fumes from a kerosene barrel ignited as he thawed a frozen faucet. Theodore Stille a farmer had brought the barrel to the station to refill. The blast hurled the top of the barrel 40 feet.
DES MOINES Iowa motorists who have not used their No 3 gasoline stamps must do so by midnight tonight No 3 stamps expire at that hour and lose validity after. No 4 stamps become effective at 12 01 am Friday and valid until midnight March 21. The OPA warns stamp holders who have unused No 3 stamps will be out of luck for four gallons of fuel per stamp.
Ira E. King was sentenced to three years in a federal penitentiary for Dyer Act violation but received two years off the term for pleading guilty and good intentions. Judge Charles A. Dewey noted the usual five year sentence and referenced King’s plans to marry upon release, with the fiancé present in court.
The policy prevents buyers of new electric motors from purchasing more powerful units than their need requires, aiming to save about 150 million pounds of copper, 55,000 tons of carbon steel, and 150,000 pounds of stainless steel annually.
War Production Board chair Donald M. Nelson told reporters in Washington that only marginal civilian economy cuts remain feasible for wartime needs. He cited priorities like increasing production of valves and heat exchangers, better material distribution, and industry concentration, noting no solid evidence civilian trimming has gone too far.

Dorothy Dillinger forty five died this morning at Washington county hospital after a long illness. Funeral services set for Saturday nine at St James Catholic church with a rosary at Sherman's Friday 8:45. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Survived by parents Monroe and Frances Dillinger two sisters Nona Dillinger and Mrs Rollie Miller one brother Rex Dillinger and niece Marilyn Miller.
Notices issued to Washington county men slated for February induction into the army. About all but nine come from the fifth registration, ages 18 to 40, with one more volunteer addition, Kenneth Ray Cuddeback, from the sixth registration. Names include Ayres, Bontinger, Chapek, Crossett, Davisson, Delaney, Estes, Feldman, Hillis, Harlard, Hernandez, Farrel, Kline, Harris Lance, Lane, Lease, Liechten, Lowe, Luers, Miller, Moore, Meathart, Monothart, Olson, Paul, Rada, Ramer, Ross, Schonf, Smith, Temple, Votruba, Waldschmidt, Wanerus, Wehrle, Whittaker, Wood and others.
Des Moines reports a five day cold spell broken with the weather bureau predicting warmer conditions this afternoon. Snow was expected tonight in the north and extreme west with strong winds. high yesterday reached 22 at Council Bluffs and Spencer recorded nine below.
Principal Harry L. Grange hopes Indianola high school students locate 10,000 pennies. The students collected 1,000 pennies in one week, and the money was donated to war stamps.
United States Agriculture Secretary Claude R. Wickard opened a national victory garden campaign aimed at boosting home vegetable production. He urged farmers and urban residents with suitable ground to grow and can vegetables for home use, supplementing ration allotments. Wickard personally led the effort to reach town and city households.
Mrs. Thomas Godfrey 71 died at her home after a stroke and months of ill health. Funeral services under L. A. Jones Funeral Home will be held Friday at 2 PM at Jones Chapel with Dr. R. Keagy officiating. Burial in Lawnwood Cemetery. She was born Zettie Strouse Sept 12 1871 in Dutch Creek Township and lived all her life in Washington County. Surviving: son Frank Godfrey. brothers George and Henry Strouse. four grandchildren. A daughter, Mrs. James Grissom, is deceased.
Wickard urged using all available ground for a vegetable garden to aid the war effort. Victory gardens would provide food for the armed forces and allies while keeping those on the home front healthy and strong. He highlighted green leafy vegetables yellow vegetables and tomatoes for their vitamins and minerals.
Wet and dry factions in the Iowa legislature prepare bills to let cities and towns decide by vote whether to allow liquor stores and taverns. Since 1933 many sessions have faced similar measures, with fourteen House bills filed today mainly clarifying in nature.
R. R. Johnston has resigned as manager of the tell office in Washington for the Mr. Pleasant Production Credit association and will sever his connection tomorrow. He did not reveal future plans and said the office, opened three and a half years ago, has built up local farming business but war travel restrictions have curtailed operations. He will remain in Washington for now.
The New Orleans campaign urges housewives to collect used fats from fried soft shell crabs to produce glycerine for explosives. Officials claim a half dozen crabs provide enough glycerine to manufacture a 37 mm anti tank shell.
Only one jury case assigned for trial at the January term of district court. The Gingerich claim against the estate of Lydia Brenneman is set for trial Monday February 1 at two o clock with petit jurors to report that day. Durst versus Durst, an equity case before the judge, is scheduled for Monday February 8 at two o'clock. Grand jurors are excused for the term with recall possible if needed.

Charles Joseph Borsdorf 22 of Rubio died at county hospital after being struck by a Milwaukee railroad freight train on the track between Rubio and Richland. He worked on a bridge for Larson Bridge Co. on the Milwaukee road and apparently did not hear the approaching train. He was married to Cora Lambert and left a five month old son John Arthur along with his parents and siblings. Funeral in Rubio at L. A. Jones on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Ralph W. Thompson was elected president and George J. Steitenbach vice president at the Washington Federal Savings and Loan annual meeting. C. R. McCutchen was re elected secretary and treasurer with three directors re elected for three year terms.
Wayland report says the McGuire farm home of Mr and Mrs Max McGuire burned to the ground last night just before midnight. Neighbors and town friends arrived promptly to aid. The cause and damages are not yet known.
Axis retreat extends about 100 miles toward the Tunisian border as British Eighth Army closes on Tripoli. Allied patrols and bombers attack on the highway and axis bases, while Rommel’s forces drift toward Tunisia seeking a retreat corridor to Tunis and Bizerte.
Mrs Albert Werden of Davenport fell ill on the Golden State Limited and was removed to Washington County Hospital. She boarded at Davenport, feared appendicitis but improved after observation and rest and will resume her journey to Los Angeles where her husband is stationed in Long Beach. She had been working in a defense plant in Galesburg Illinois.
National headquarters of the selective service announced that a final draft plan to meet the needs of the navy marine corps and coast guard is under review by the war and navy departments President Roosevelt had ended voluntary seagoing enlistments for men aged 18 through 37 and ordered draft enrollment through draft boards with a start around February 1.
