Special to Evening Journal Newton Mass January 21 Professor Elisha Gray renowned for telephone work died suddenly this morning while pursuing a submarine signaling project. Amid Buckingham Palace bulletins and Osbourne House telegrams fear and relief intertwined as Emperor William and the Prince of Wales visited London. Crowds lined streets, royal carriages moved in Trafalgar Square, and prayers were offered across churches for the Queen's condition.

In Chicago on January 21 Ayling Bros stove polish factory at 826 828 Milwaukee Ave burned as benzine and gasoline tanks ignited. Engineer narrowly escaped death. Maria Ayling 80 and other family members were rescued by John Ayling Sergeant Reagan William Mahler William Donnerstag Patrolman Meyers.
Springfield report says F W Herbst of Shiloh for twelve years grand treasurer of the United Order of the Trouband is short in funds by 1700 dollars. A committee found accounts unbalanced, Herbst agreed to resign, admitting he used the order's money and cannot repay. Bondsmen protect the order.
Paris reports the death at 8 25 Saturday evening of Jacques Victor Albert Duke de Broglie born June 18 1821 in Paris. He served as the first ambassador to England of the third republic and was known for his hatred of republican rule and disdain for public opinion. He and his father were among France’s forty immortals.
A federal court judge issued a ten day restraining order lifting the blockade on the Chicago and Southeastern railroad in Crawfordsville Indiana. Railroad crews began repairs after the order but Wesley Grantham and followers briefly resisted at the right of way until a United States marshal delivered papers and Grantham yielded.
The case is set for trial on January 28 with Grant ham's attorneys claiming the restraining order was wrongfully granted and confident it will be dissolved. The first freight train in ten days crossed the road Saturday afternoon after Grantham's blockade. A mob destroyed two bridges on the line beyond the disputed right of way.
In Saginaw and Day counties Michigan miners express dissatisfaction with the current wage scale. Operators contend the average 50 cent per ton rate is the maximum they can afford. Day county also shows mood for higher pay according to local mine owners.
Two hundred masked men attacked South Omaha guards and police on Saturday night burning the city pest house used for smallpox. Earlier an attempted arson on Friday was thwarted by fire crews. The mob overpowered guards and faced officers with firearms as the building burned.

Berlin reports Emperor William donated 50000 marks each to the Baltic and North Sea marine stations at Kiel and Wilhelmshaven. The funds are to aid the relief of orphans and widows of navy officers.
London dispatch notes Emperor William's wish to be received at Osborne House as grandson and his sympathy for Queen Victoria. The Daily Telegraph and Morning Post quote reverent tributes, while Paris coverage details the American Chamber of Commerce banquet and Gowdy's toast for the Queen.
Herman Schrieber, a wealthy Red Bud banker, has enlisted St. Louis detectives and postal inspectors after receiving a threat letter demanding 2500 in cash or his home would be blown up with dynamite. A second letter reached Red Bud post office, and both writings appear by the same hand. Detectives tracked the letter to East St. Louis but were barred from reading it.
