Washington felt a deep freeze after a two inch snow as temperatures plunged to three degrees below zero. President Ford prepared proclamations to tighten oil imports and expand investment credit on business taxes and planned to outline details of the program at a televised news conference Tuesday.
The Senate Democratic Caucus voted 4 57 to create a select committee to probe the CIA FBI and other intelligence agencies similar to the Watergate panel. Sen John Stennis opposed while Sen John Pastore announced the plan expects a Sept 1 report and awaits full Senate approval with a Democratic majority likely to back it.
Archbishop Makarios pleaded for calm as thousands of rock throwing protesters pressed against riot police and the National Guard outside the American Center in Nicosia. He urged restraint after rallying crowds to disperse following violent clashes over perceived American pro Turkish policies.
The forecast calls for becoming mostly cloudy and warmer this afternoon with highs in the middle to upper 20s. Tonight remains cloudy with a slight chance of freezing rain and rising temperatures slowly. Tuesday turns windy and colder with a chance of snow by afternoon and highs in the mid to upper 30s. Southerly winds 15 to 25 mph this afternoon and southwest 10 to 20 mph tonight. Precipitation chances: 2 percent tonight and 30 percent Tuesday.
Robert B. Anderson, a bass baritone with a decade in Europe, returns to America for a Washington Concert Association event next Sunday January 26 at 3 p.m. in the high school auditorium. He will be joined by pianist Paul Moore. program spans opera, American folk and ballads, plus contemporary and Broadway music. Anderson, a Lincoln Nebraska native, studied at Nebraska and UCLA, won the National Carnegie Hall Auditions, and drew praise from Thomas Schippers.
Senators Jackson and Kennedy announce a joint resolution to block Ford from imposing a $2 per barrel tariff on imported oil and to derail decontrol of old oil prices. House Ways and Means chief designate Ullman backs rationing over energy taxes and aims for March 2 tax-cut action while polls show public support for nationwide gasoline rationing.
The Iowa Department of Revenue billed the City of Washington for 84445 dollars in back sales tax and penalties on Crane Company equipment. The city, described as the paper owner of local plant gear financed by industrial revenue bonds, faces questions over liability for sales tax on equipment in bond financed plants. The company may appeal and the issue could affect Iowa’s industrial revenue bond program.
Washington County SEATS Committee plans a membership drive with interim funding through May 31. A full year from June 1 costs 8 dollars. 50 cents intra county rides for non members, 25 cents for members. Memberships available via drivers, committee, or Senior Center YMCA.
Western Iowa Senator James Griffin introduces a bill to repeal the current Sunday liquor and beer sales restrictions. If enacted, all permit holders could sell liquor from 11 30 a m Sunday to 2 30 a m Monday, removing the requirement to rely on food sales.
Out-of-state ticketholders have won nearly 2.3 million dollars in Illinois Lottery major drawings over 23 weeks. Missouri leads with 13 winners totaling 1.46 million, followed by Wisconsin with 730 thousand. Indiana and Iowa have smaller totals. Overall out-of-state winners account for about 13 percent of prizes.
The board will review a general fund budget estimate possibly up to 3 million dollars for fiscal year 1975 76, with a hearing likely in February. The plan includes 186 900 dollars in miscellaneous income and 314 550 dollars in unspent funds carried over, and proposes early deposits to earn more interest. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. with most of it devoted to staff evaluations in executive session.
Three masked Arab gunmen ended a 17 hour siege at Orly Airport by releasing ten hostages and fleeing by Air France Boeing 707. A police spokesman said all hostages were in good health though some were shocked. Egyptian Ambassador Kadry negotiated with the captors as Valery Giscard d Estaing sought a peaceful resolution.
