Pearson placed an electric heating pad in the dog house on Tuesday to guard the pet from near zero temperatures. A short circuit sent the dog outdoors, destroyed the dog house, and caused $200 damage to Pearson's home.
John A Hochstedler of Kalona north farm turned from farming to woodwork after a 1959 heart attack. Now 75 he runs a shop, crafts knee hole desks and cabinets, and photographs each piece to help customers decide on designs. He notes asthma and winter dust—yet keeps a neat home and continues work.
The Agriculture Department is studying plans to handle a record 270 million pounds of surplus butter. James M. Casey, a former Washington resident visiting Iowa, was injured in a highway collision on Tuesday near Highway 218 and the Winfield road. Fellow worker Frank J. Berlinsky was killed. Eastle Purvis, 18, of Winfield, was injured. The crash occurred in dense fog. Casey was moved to Veterans Hospital Iowa City after treatment in Mt. Pleasant. Purvis suffered a skull fracture and other injuries and also went to Iowa City.
Chinese and North Korean war prisoners completed a mass march to freedom from Panmunjom to South Korea and Formosa. Indian guards handed over the last 21 600 prisoners to United Nations officials as most former captives fled to new lives in the south while a final small group chose to return to communism.

Riverside announces January Friendship night to be held at Riverside public school tonight at 7 50. The program committee led by Dr and Mrs Richard Elliott has secured the Red Brick School band and director Mrs Benson. Parents and friends of school pupils are invited. Mr and Mrs Paul Schmidt chair the refreshment committee.
Mrs. Dowell 86 died Tuesday morning in Des Moines. In line with her wishes there will be no funeral service. cremation and burial of ashes at Woodlawn cemetery. She was longtime Camp Fire leader and was honored for the Lake Darling camp ceremony last summer.

Glasgow Montana reports 17 degrees below zero while Eckman North Carolina hits 40 below. Kansas Missouri see over 30 degree drops in six hours and seven deaths are attributed to the weather.
Adm. Arthur W. Radford urged Senate passage of the St. Lawrence Seaway bill in a letter to Sen Homer Ferguson. The Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman endorsed the proposal as Senate debate stretched into the sixth day on the controversial measure.
Four people died in Tuesday night crashes across Iowa. A Fort Dodge two car wreck fatally injured 26 year old Mrs Glen Peterson an expectant mother whose baby girl died after birth. Nearby on Iowa 38 two car crash near Monticello killed Gene Bacon 27 and Mrs Burt Fear 24 of Hopkinton with two others critically injured.
Senator Mike Monroney warned that continued price hikes could break America's coffee drinking habit as major chains raised prices to 1.03 a pound. Rhode Island's Restaurant Association voted to ban coffee signs, seeking substitutes like milk and tea as wholesale prices rise after frost-damaged Brazilian crop.
Senate Republican Leader Knowland warned of overtime sessions unless the voting time agreement is reached soon. He indicated a possible Senate session tonight and, with other leaders, hopes for a vote by next week.
Jerry Longer of Washington was ordained into the ministry at a Prairie Flower church service Tuesday afternoon. A church council unanimously accepted him, with Rev. Timethy Barrett of Muscatine delivering the charge to the church and Rev. Daryl Smith of Yarmouth giving the candidate the charge.
