Mrs Laton Schooley has taken the role of Brighton area news correspondent for the Evening Journal. Residents are asked to submit news items to her, supplementing the ongoing reporting by veteran Brighton correspondent Mrs Tony Meath.
Ainsworth elementary invites parents and friends to visit during school hours January 21 through January 25. No conferences scheduled. visitors may stay from half an hour to an hour. The new open classroom building has partitioned rooms. kindergarten has its own room. Music and PE in the gym which doubles as lunch room. Classes have been in session since December after the old building burned January 6, 1973.
The five year old artificial flame atop Cedar Falls City Hall was snuffed out due to the energy crisis. The American Legion Post that placed the gas fed monument in 1969 agreed to honor national leaders request to conserve fuel by turning off the flame.
Socialist Premier Edmond Leburton's coalition government resigned today amid a parliamentary dispute sparked by the oil crisis. A Royal Palace spokesman said Leburton handed the resignation to King Baudouin, who accepted it and asked him to run affairs pending a new cabinet.
UPI reports Sen Harold Fischer proposes cutting the Iowa sales tax from 3 to 2 cents on the dollar for one year starting July 1 to return a portion of the $119 million state surplus to residents. Governor Ray had suggested removing the tax on food and prescription drugs.
PILOTTOWN La UPI A tanker Key Trader loaded with home heating oil and the Norwegian freighter Baune collided near the Mississippi River mouth. At least two crewmen died, 14 missing, 65 rescued as fog hampered efforts. Flames covered about a mile of the river surface. Coast Guard said two bodies found, fire boats fought burning oil slicks, Bayne wrecked.
Fierce winds and dense fog hit the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies with heavy rain, while the Atlantic Coast faced ice and snow. Governors Andrus and Reagan declared disaster areas in Idaho, California as floodwaters displaced thousands. A fourth storm threatened as mudslide deaths mounted and a Rock Island collision left one boy dead and others injured. Temperatures ranged from 5 below zero in Minnesota to 73 in Florida as travel advisories spread nationwide.
A Jesuit priest says he performed the Roman Catholic rite of exorcism to drive out the devil harassing a young San Francisco family. The disturbances included shoes being thrown, towels set on fire, and windows broken as the family slept about two hours nightly. Archbishop McGucken approved two exorcisms for the case, with the last rite on Sept 18 ending the attacks.
Secretary of State Kissinger wraps a week of diplomacy in Egypt and Israel and moves to engage Jordan Saudi Arabia Syria and Iraq. Sadat joins talks as Kissinger explains the disengagement deal and urges broader peace, while Israeli and Egyptian officials hail the accord and outline military pullbacks and demobilization.
A county wide Homemaker Service begins Monday January 21 for all residents of Washington County. Trained homemakers will assist ill disabled and elderly with light housekeeping home health care errands transportation and companionship. The service is free to those unable to pay with a sliding scale for those who can. Four homemakers Opal Goodwin Lucille Escher Olletha Waterhouse and Linda Dawson have completed about 50 hours of training and will work with community groups and agencies to aid families and children in crisis and teach budgeting meal planning and child care. Anyone in need is urged to contact the Department of Social Services in the county courthouse.

Federal Judge John Sirica says there is a distinct possibility of unlawful destruction of evidence on some Nixon Watergate tapes and urges the matter be referred to a grand jury for possible indictments. Special Prosecutor Jaworski vows an exhaustive FBI aided investigation and grand jury referral if warranted.
A new federally chartered credit union organized for workers in Washington Industrial Park plants reaches early formation. The Washington Industrial Park Federal Credit Union will serve McQuay Perfex Crane Co. Washington Manufacturing and Northrup King employees, with potential membership around 500. A union study committee spurred the effort, and governance will be by a shareholder-elected board.
The Waterloo police narcotics division conducted a targeted crackdown in Black Hawk County seizing over 12 000 dollars worth of drugs and arresting 11 people. Seven officers raided two Cedar Falls houses and one in Waterloo, cutting heroin user numbers from about 300 to 150. The Cedar Falls raid yielded marijuana and a hallucinogen worth about 12 000 dollars.
Iowa Power and Light officials announced the Cooper Nuclear Station near Brownville Nebraska will reach commercial operation next summer to meet peak loads. The 40 year AEC license was issued to Nebraska Public Power District and IPALCO holds half the plant’s output.
