Authorities search homes for cash and checks tied to the crime and review a taxi driver sighting near a Manchester estate as officers pursue a seafaring link in the naval style raid.
Oscar Anderson, 59, was found guilty of assault with attempt to murder after a shooting left Clifford Kelly, 47, paralyzed. Sentencing set for Feb 2 with motion for new trial due by then. sanity questioned, previously deemed insane, and Anderson had been released from an Iowa state hospital last December for trial.
December activity at the Iowa State Employment Service office in Washington reports 796 people visited, 98 filed new job applications, 38 found work including 10 on farms, and 89 new unemployment claims plus 110 continued claims. About 528 dollars paid to unemployed workers. 13 employers visited. 125 layoffs recorded due to seasonal work or lack of orders. End of month registered unemployed 182. Yearly totals: 10,285 visitors, 1,136 employed, 2,255 visited by employers, 363 new unemployment claims, 616 workers placed in agriculture.
The agriculture department projects a peacetime turkey crop of 41,884,000 birds for next fall, a one percent rise from 1949 and second only to 1945 wartime levels. It notes the 1949 price support floor of 31 cents a pound led to 11 million pounds of turkey meat being bought and stored, while 1950 supports are expected to be lower.
The battleship Missouri remained stuck in Hampton Roads mud for nearly three days. Army help with a mud sucking device failed to reach beneath the hull. divers from USS Kittiwake aided salvage as air blasts and excavation continue. Atlantic Fleet noted Capt William D Brown tested an acoustic range device near the Chesapeake Bay channel.
Washington sources say President Truman may seek a federal no strike order in the soft coal fields for about 80 days. The move would follow ongoing labor actions and reports of critically low coal supplies, amid pressure from industry and lawmakers.
An attorney for National City Lines said the firm will appeal if Ottumwa council revokes its license to run the city bus system. The council debated authority to revoke and whether Mayor Loveless could preside fairly after attempts to bar him from the hearing. The strike by the AFL Bus Drivers' union tied up service since December 27 and the city cites lack of service and unapproved permits for 1948 and 1949 as grounds.
Thirty four farmers attended the talk led by Extension Engineer Dale Hull from Iowa State College on winter tractor care focusing on air cleaners and warm up. Iowa's safety department reports drunken drivers caused one quarter of 1949 fatal accidents, with 549 killed in 454 crashes. Speed was the main factor in 139 deaths. teens showed a notable drop in fatal accidents thanks to school driver training and stricter penalties, aided by media cooperation.
Des Moines Iowa forecast shows fair, continued cold conditions this afternoon and tonight. Daytime highs range from 12 above in the north to 28 in the south, with overnight lows from 10 below in the northeast to five above in the southwest. Friday brings partial clouds and warmer air with southerly winds around 15 mph, highs near 25 in the northwest and 35 southeast. Yesterday recorded highs of 35 and lows of 2.
Washington Federal Savings & Loan members reelected three directors C V Crull L A Jones and Ralph Bauer at the annual meeting held Wednesday afternoon. Dr P L Etter named president for the coming year with Crull Bauer and Mrs Marguerite Swift among other officers. The organization reported year end assets over 114 million dollars reflecting continued growth.
Washington contributors to the March of Dimes drive may win 5 by suggesting a slogan for 1951. Three judges will select the best entry to be adopted for next year. Submissions may be mailed to the March of Dimes and left at local banks or the junior high school.
The local American Red Cross chapter reports work on projects is up to expectation. Fifty one pairs of house slippers were sent to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Cheyenne Wyoming. Volunteers are meeting quotas for washcloths bed pan covers and board table covers. A quota of lovettes is being accepted. Knitting yarn is available for sweaters gloves or socks. Miss Besse Allen general field representative of the Red Cross Midwestern Area assisted the chapter.
In Jefferson Iowa voters approved a 322000 bond issue by 970 to 173 for grade and high school additions. Total project cost reaches 462000 with 140000 already in the building fund. Grade school work adds classrooms music lunch facilities indoor recreation visual education and an auditorium. High school plans include auditorium gymnasium more classrooms and improved speech library and homemaking facilities.
Admiral Louis E. Denfeld announced his retirement from the United States Navy effective March 1 after 41 years of service. He cited lack of loyalty accusations by Secretary Matthews as a reason, and his ouster followed the Senate delaying approval of Forrest P. Sherman as chief of naval operations.
Davenport reports prosecutor Clark Filseth will submit the case of 22 year old Elm Nora Epperly of Rock Island to a county grand jury after a sanity commission found dementia praecox. Epperly, an inmate at Mercy hospital where 41 women died in a Jan 7 fire, confessed to starting the blaze but no murder charge will be pressed by the prosecutor.
