Union Electric contract rejected by NHUKUK members

The Operating Engineers Union at Union Electric Co. rejected a company offer in a Sunday vote. This marks the third rejection since the strike began November 20. Other unions at Mitchell Illinois Osage Beach Missouri and nine plants across Iowa Missouri Illinois also voted no. The strike involves over 4,300 workers across the three states.

Rich town kidnapping plot foiled in Bennettsville shootout

Two gunmen from Charlotte plotted to kidnap all the rich residents of Bennettsville. One suspect, Charles Scales, was wounded in a shootout after a victim fired. Grover Bennett escaped, later surrendering in Columbia. Wounded victim Frances Lindsay, wife of state senator, was hospitalized in serious condition.

Five Cowles firms found guilty of mail fraud

Five Des Moines based firms tied to Cowles Communications were convicted on 50 counts of mail fraud and fined the maximum 1000 dollars per count. The UPI report notes the operations as a nationwide menace with a multi million dollar annual business, using a franchise system to sell subscriptions and mislead customers.

Tax reform moves near final draft in Iowa

The Town Legislative Tax Study Committee in Des Moines presses to finish a tax package for the current session. It seeks to eliminate the personal property tax, replace lost revenue with a levy on adjusted gross income, and retain a 1 percent tax on interest and dividends while avoiding a full repeal of the 75 percent top income tax. The package also includes a limited property tax freeze for 1971-72 and a $145 million state equalization appropriation, with the goal to shift about $230 million in property tax revenue to other sources.

Man Held After Abduction Attempt of Ex Wife

Dennis G. Kelly, 2 0, arrested in Oklahoma City on concealed weapon charge after allegedly abducting his former wife Diane 25 from New Windsor Illinois, witnesses say he chased her to a service station, then drove away. Des Moines police had issued a state wide alert, noting Kelly was armed with a long knife and a gun.
